Regarding your message about my Draft: Gallery of Atomic Orbitals Page

Hello Bduke, I'd like to thank you for your considerate message about the rejection of my draft. You are right that I am disappointed that it has been rejected. Unfortunately I'm starting to feel that my efforts might be wasted on Wikipedia. I think I am primarily interested in giving clear explanations on seemingly introductory topics that would be helpful for, say, college level students, but which are missing from most introductory textbooks. Unfortunately the "missing from most introductory textbooks" puts the type of content I would like to include in the category of not citable/not in the literature, so it feels like it comes off with a little bit too much of an "original research flavor". It seems I may need to find a different outlet for this type of content.

That said, if you're willing to share, I'm curious to hear your opinion about any of (1) the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Gallery_of_Atomic_Orbitals page, (2) recent edits I've made to Table of spherical harmonics or (3) atomic orbital.

Also, you suggested I take the content form my draft page and merge it into the atomic orbital page. I'd considered that previously and I'm reconsidering it now. Unfortunately the figures, which were the main content of my draft page, do have overlap with existing content on that page. I think the figures themselves come as a complete set, it doesn't make sense to me to include only a subset of them because the merit, that I saw, in them, was that they were an exhaustive gallery of atomic orbitals up to , as opposed to a representative subset. Also, I think it interesting to show orbitals beyond because I guess that many students are interested in them (I was), but it is sometimes hard to find pictures of them. Especially side-by-side real/complex. But again, here I am in the "original research" territory...

I also have higher level issues with the atomic orbitals page because it seems like it caught up in a triangle with hydrogen-like atom and hydrogen atom where this is already a ton of duplication of content, so I'm not sure where to start to refine the overall narrative about atomic orbitals on Wikipedia. I'm searching for a venue to open that conversation..

Anyways, I would be delighted if you are willing to respond to any of what I said, but if not, I just want to thank you again for your consideration. I am interested in becoming a more experience Wikipedia editor but it has felt like I've had a fair amount of impersonal rejection which has made it feel lonely.Twistar48 (talk) 02:42, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

I think the essential point is that Wikipedia is an encycopedia. It is not a teaching aid, even though it is useful for many students. --Bduke (talk) 05:51, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on the talk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made, Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly name Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like [1] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

The Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

Thank you for your time, I hope to edit with you in the future.Sgerbic (talk) 06:52, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Happy to do that. --Bduke (talk) 00:40, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, but note that I am no longer an admin. I retired as I decided I was too old to do it well. Bduke (talk) 03:55, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Right—I knew I associated your name with some admirable decision, but forgot that it was the one to step down. A decade-plus-long tenure as admin is still something to celebrate, even now that you're into your retirement phase You can adjust here if you'd prefer not to be greeted next year. End of Wikipedia

Greetings. I saw your comment where you were speculating about the end of Wikipedia. Years ago I started a thread about planning for a post admin era. Since then, the situation has continued to degrade. At the time, we had 526 active administrators. We now have 482 active administrators. Ok no that's not a dramatic drop off, but it's a continual slide down. Wikipedia will eventually run out of admins. In fact, I could argue it already has. But, it won't come as a big crash and sudden awareness by the whole project that we're short admins. It will happen very gradually, with out much notice of it happening. This has already happened at Commons. Commons is woefully short of admins. Deletion requests there wait months. Right now, the backlog is 5 months long. Things will get like that here. It will take time, but it will get that bad. I've tried to get discussion going on the issue since 2016, but it never gains traction. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:36, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
