Hi--perhaps you can help me. I just withdraw a nomination for Berwick Grammar School, accepting in good faith the assertion that it had a high school. But in re-examining the school website and the article, it appears that the grammar school is noted even on the website as a school distinct from the high school, and that the article is only about the grammar school (not the two combined). What would you suggest I do? It seems I should withdraw my withdrawal, if that is possible. Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 01:13, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

I noticed your withdrawal and closed the AfD as keep because of it. The term "Grammar School" is used in Australia and the UK in a very different way from in the US. It can often be a very up-market high school and often a private school. I'll take a further look. I do not know this schools. It is the other side of Melbourne from where I live. --Bduke (Discussion) 01:21, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
Hi. Happy new year. Just dropping by re the above. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 22:03, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

There is little point in telling me about these sources. I was just tidying up the AfD nomination. The problem with most of these references is that they are by Kylie herself. They are not independent of the subject. However, a quick look suggests that most, if not all, are already in the article. --Bduke (Discussion) 19:37, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Sorry. What else could be done to keep the page? Would https://www.google.com/search?tbs=bks:1&q=%22Kylie+Sturgess%22 be of any use? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.109.233.186 (talk) 22:23, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Please keep all discussion of edits to the BSA member controversies on the talk page and not on my personal talk page, esp. with messages against any edit. Thank you. --CJ Withers (talk) 21:52, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

You are making edits across a range of articles, not just at Boy Scouts of America membership controversies, so it is entirely appropriate for me to raise the issue on your talk page. Indeed that is what it there for. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:09, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Melbourne Meetup

Hi there. Just inviting you to the Melbourne meetup this Sunday at 11am, to celebrate our 11th anniversary. Details on that page. Hope to see you there! SteveBot (talk) 01:49, 11 January 2012 (UTC) (on behalf of Steven Zhang)

Hello Brian, could you please have a look at the recent discussion on the ESR? I've got the feeling of a developing conflict. Surely, the professionals at the European Scout Office have a conflict of interests, but I got the impression that most of their contributions are correct and would improve the article, so I supported them. Unfortunately, Chris announced a rebuttal of my comments. YiS --jergen (talk) 09:28, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

OK. Let us wait and see. I have to, as I am very busy for a few days. I have been observing this develop and I will try to keep an eye on it. --Bduke (Discussion) 11:03, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi From David Zuccaro

It was great meeting you today. Interesting discussions. Cheers! Flaviusvulso (talk) 10:20, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Indeed, I enjoyed it too. Cheers.--Bduke (Discussion) 10:59, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Bduke,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 15:44, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

February Melbourne Meetup

Hi All. Just letting you know that we have another meetup planned for Melbourne, on Sunday, 26th February at 11am. More details can be found at the meetup page. Pizza will be provided. Look forward to seeing all of you there :-) SteveBot (talk) 22:49, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Science task force

Bduke, I have renamed the userbox for the task force formerly known as WikiProject Science pearls. You will need to update the address on your user page to Template:User Science task force. RockMagnetist (talk) 07:11, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

New cfds regarding "Old Fooians"

Two new cfds propose the renaming of some twenty categories. Most of those who took part in last year's cfd "Former pupils by school in the United Kingdom" seem unaware of them, so I am notifying all those who took part in that discussion, to improve the quality of the discussion by broadening participation to more fully achieve consensus. Please consider contributing here and here. Moonraker (talk) 13:08, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Sea Joey Scout

Brian, maybe not in Australia, but it is not uncommon for nso's to have an official water-oriented section for that age group. For example both Flemish nso's have a Zeehonden/Zeehondjes (Seal) section. --Egel Reaction? 14:17, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for that. In Australia and UK, as far as I know, a Sea Scout Group can have a Joey/Beaver section and a Cub section, but members are not Sea Scouts and do not wear a distinctive uniform as the Scout & Explorer/Rover sections do. My edit was about the Australia row of a table. --Bduke (Discussion) 17:29, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Can I please get a copy of this deleted page: vNations Either via email or in my sandbox somewhere. Tanks Darkmantle90 (talk) 16:40, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Send me an email via wikipedia (I have email activated on my talk page - see "E-mail this user" in the left column) explaining why you want it. I agree with its deletion. It did not demonstrate notability. When I see your reasons, I will think about it and perhaps email you the text of the deleted article. --Bduke (Discussion) 21:37, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Quesitons for an MSU research project

Hello, I am involved with a research project for Michigan State University and am wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions regarding tool sets on Wikipedia. If so please let me know and I can post back to you. Here is a link to the project if you are interested Wikipedia:United States Education Program/Courses/Wiki-Project Management (Jonathan Obar) , and if you have any questions please let me know. Ltezl (talk) 01:22, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Not interested. --Bduke (Discussion) 02:21, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

The reason for the prod was at Talk:Peter Hackworth, in fact. BencherliteTalk 09:14, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

So? A prod should give reasons. --Bduke (Discussion) 10:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
So a newbie editor made a so-called mistake and put the reason on the talk page not in the prod template itself. Big deal - in fact, explaining the reasons on the talk page isn't a bad instinct for a new editor. You didn't check the talk page before removing the prod, and that's more surprising. Oh well. After removing the prod, you've followed the other steps at WP:DEPROD, right? Notified the prodder, added the relevant template to the talk page? No? Oh. BencherliteTalk 10:17, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Science lovers wanted!

Science lovers wanted!
Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists (from anthropologists to zoologists) who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! SarahStierch (talk) 19:00, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Polyacetylene

Relabeling melanin as a form of polyacetylene is, IMHO, semantic gymnastics to diminish the discovery by the Ziegler-Natta route. I think that populating Wikipedia articles (now yours) with the melanin device is giving undue weight. I could go on, but I am apparently tainted goods on this topic. Our erstwhile expert in this area, User:Materialscientist, is occupied with the heavy labor of protecting the article Clint Eastwood vs dealing with matters of materials science (sarcasm). So, I ask is that you, as an administrator and an outsider to this tempest, try to help our young editor Ben as he deals with this area (such as Nucleophilic's claim that "John McGinness pioneered much of the modern field of organic electronics"). I cannot work on this theme as much as it deserves, and we really need a neutral party. --Smokefoot (talk) 02:32, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I have had a quick look, but I just do not have the time to give this the attention that you think it needs. I've removed your image, as it clutters up the page. --Bduke (Discussion) 23:05, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Your assistance please...

On November 17 2007 you were the 3rd administrator to speedy delete an article on Stephen Manning. The first 2 deletions were WP:CSD#G10 -- yours was WP:CSD#A7. Sometime earlier I linked to Stephen Manning, a journalist.

Could you please check the contribution history of the deleted article, and, if I made any edits to it, could you email that version to me? Geo Swan (talk) 21:27, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

That page was not about a journalist. It appears to be a school student writing rude nonsense about another student. There were only three edits by the same user, who made only one other edit (or one that was not on a now deleted article) on the same day in 2007. You did not edit it. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:18, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the quick response. Geo Swan (talk) 22:28, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Seeing as the DIBC page got deleted, could I have a copy of the version I made of it? Weasel2000 (talk) 21:35, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Good day, I saw your username on the page of Australian Aboriginal Languages (from back in 2008) and thought you might be interested by the creation of Wikimedia Indigenous Languages. I also saw your involvment with Wikimedia Australia, chapters' involvement in Wikimedia Indigenous Languages will a be a key factor for success. Please feel free to forward this information to anybody who might be interested. Thanks, Amqui (talk) 19:37, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

== Disambiguation link notification for October 6

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Poul Jørgensen (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Localized MO's

Hi. I would like your opinion as a quantum chemist re the article Localized molecular orbitals. On 2 Dec, Officer781 deleted as "incorrect information" two sentences of a paragraph which I added on 1 May 2011. It still looks correct to me, but I am not certain and I would appreciate the opinion of a third party who understands MO theory. Dirac66 (talk) 22:38, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

I have had a go at it, but am off out soon. VB theory can use the two roughly sp2 hybrids, but it does not have to. VSEPR should not be mentioned. --Bduke (Discussion) 23:15, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
OK, thank you. I agree with your corrections. Dirac66 (talk) 00:32, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Extended periodic table limit

Previously there seemed to be a large consensus that elements higher than Z=173 cannot exist which seemed to be backed by large number of scientific articles. Why is the limit now z=218? Robo37 (talk) 09:52, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

I really do not know. It has been like that for a long time. I have not really been active there. I think the references need to be looked at carefully. I will see if I can find time. --Bduke (Discussion) 20:43, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
173 was based on a misunderstanding of the theoretical calculations. While it's true that at Z>173 the 1s states enter the negative continuum, that in itself does not stop the atom from existing. Instead the atom remains stable and bound if the 1s shell is not ionized, and the 1s states mixed with the states in the negative continuum to form a bound "resonance" state. Sorry to bother you with this, but I came across Worldofanjay whilst new page patrolling, and discovered that User:Worldofanjay redirected to it? I am contemplating removing the redirect on the user page, moving Worldofanjay to the user page and cleaning up afterwards, but I wanted a second opinion on this. Many thanks in advance. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 12:16, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Looks OK to me. Worldofanjay and its talk page should then be deleted and the user told not to do this again. I’m off to bed now. I'll look at it all in the morning. --Bduke (Discussion) 12:36, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
I've cleaned that up and left him a note. Yet another one who thinks this is Myspace. Cheers, JohnCD (talk) 13:12, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
