Banks and categories

I think the way to create the subcategories is to enter an article in the subcategory first and then edit the subcategory page to put in the broader category. (I'm only about 90% certain that this is correct, though). I don't know who created the banks category in the first place, but I put most of the articles in there now in there. --DMG413 17:52, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

The issue of notability is a non-trivial one; someone has already come to your defense on the matter at the AfD discussion page for the entry. If you are able to make a convincing (and credible0 case for preserving the article in the encyclopaedia, now is the time to do it, and the discussion page would be the most appropriate venue. Ionian Bank

Hello, Acad Ronin. I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I either forgot or didn't notice your message because of more than one comment being added to my talk page when I was offline. I suppose that the list on the Ionian Bank article could be kept as it is. However, if it is kept, other text should be added. An introduction about the bank would be the minimum. It would be nice if there were more content, such as details about the most important events in the bank's history, like being taken over during World War II, as well.

Did you write the list in your own words or did you compile it from the sources listed? If it was compiled, there may be a copyright problem, as the publications don't seem like they would be public domain. However, I think there is an exemption for factual information in certain cases. HSBC Malta/UK Call Centre

Good point, whether we should call it UK as it will deal with UK customers, or Malta because its in Malta. I would think the bank will call it "Valletta CSC" (Customer Service Centre - assuming its in Valletta of course). I only really put UK to start with to highlight the fact that it wasnt going to be doing Malta work, but I suppose from reading it thats clear. Hmm Ian3055 20:30, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:El Alamein VC.JPG

Vandalism by 203.27.235.5

I just undid some vandalism by 203.27.235.5 on the ICICI Bank page. Going to the talk page for the user shows that the user has vandalized in the past, including an article on Jammu that you fixed. Can we just ban the site?

Argh, I didn't realise when I just warned the IP address that they already had a final warning. I just gave them a final warning then for their recent vandalism- if they vandalise again, then they can and most likely will be blocked.

122.50.140.35 vandalized the Mauritius Commercial Bank page by deleting the entire History block.

220.244.190.214 vandalized the State Bank of India page by typing in gibberish in the references section.

I've had a look at the contributions of the two IP addresses. The first one was just testing, so I've let that be for now, as it was their first and only edit. The second one made two edits, and I see you left a message on their talk page, which is good! Thanks.
In future, you'll get a faster response if you warn the user with one of the templates from WP:WARN (starting at the first level, and if vandalism continues, escalating up the next levels). If you do that, after a level 4 warning you can list them at WP:AIV where someone can deal with it in a matter of minutes.

Request for a vandal block

Hi Cattle Girl,

We need to block user 217.91.43.41 again. They were blocked for two months in the past for repeated vandalism but are back to doing it again. They vandalized the page "dollar cost averaging" with some homophobic stuff.

I've given them a final warning- if they vandalise again in the near future, they should be blocked. They've been reverted, as well.
For a quicker block if I'm not online you may want to list them on WP:AIV- someone will look into it almost as soon as it comes up.

Hi re Wignacourt towers. I believe there were seven towers of this style, six built by wignacourt, one by Lascaris. Six still exist, the missing one is a wiggnacourt tower, was close to Xghajra, destroyed by the British to clear the field of fire of their new battery. The battery was named for the destroyed tower. Added articles for the original tower and the battery this evening. Uploading some images for the battery now. I do not know of any images for the original tower. --Shoka 21:28, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, forgot that an article for St Mary's tower already existed, and search missed it because of the variations of St / St. We could do with fixing that. Anyway fixed Wignacourt towers to point to the St Mary's Tower article. Santa Maria delle Grazie Tower and Della Grazie Battery articles exist as well --Shoka 23:17, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Just my 2c, my own preferred compromise, based on experience at the WP:MOSMAC discussion, is "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", on articles focussing on Greek topics. "RoM" is the proper name and the article location, so that alone gets the wikilink, "former Yugoslav" can arguably pass as a disambiguating qualifier (although I'm not really convinced that's necessary, there's a strong feeling among Greek editors that they don't like plain "RoM"). This is only by way of exception, for Greece-related articles; everywhere else simply RoM is preferred. Abbreviated "FYROM" should basically never be used. Fut.Perf. ☼ 09:53, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

Regarding point (1), as to the deletion of the material. Indeed, I found the 'Interpretations' section on that page highly amusing - I'm afraid talks on shamans and other neo-spiritual are a very sad must when speaking of any megalithic temple... I believe that the issue of the transfer/move being reverted to the Ħaġar Qim page was rather because the other user believed there was no contextual link with the Megalithic Temples page; on the other hand I completely removed the offending section...we'll see what happens next on that issue.

As to point (2), I agree with your approach, especially considering the stubby Skorba page you mentioned,and the Ta' Ħaġrat page, which does not seem to exist.

I agree making the section The UNESCO Sites into a list pointing to their respective articles - however I suggest we use the Infobox World Heritage Site for each of those articles, since the listing is shared between them. I have in mind something similar to the way the UNESCO listing of the Jesuit Missions in Argentina/Brazil was tackled here, here and here. (This is also a shared listing vaguely similar to the Maltese temple listing/s)

Probably true, but there's still some more that can be said on some of them. This one, for instance, doesn't indicate where in Zanzibar it was based, or say who its Governor was, what sort of banking it was involved with, whether it had branches, and if so whether they were all in Zanzibar, whether it simply closed down or closed because of high debts, other important events in its history, etc etc etc... It may be destined to be stubby, but it can still be bigger than it currently is, surely. Grutness...wha? 05:37, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Signal Hill Battery

Hi, I just got back from the above mentioned battery. I managed to find my way in as well. I will be uploading some photos soon. I even managed to get into the underground bunker there as well. I do have pictures outside the fortification but because it was getting dark some of the photos came out over or under exposed. I might be able to put a HDR together. I might return to the sight soon to take some exterior shots but I don't want to go back inside that bunker. You don't know how creepy it was down there, and hot as well. There arey two or three bunkers within that vicinity. The last couple of times I went to look at the fort the doors were welded shut so on this occasion when I went out there I was only expecting to take photos of the exterior only, but to my surprise the door was open. At first it seems as though there is only one level and I almost left without find the underground bunker. If you do visit the site look out for the tiny hatch with the ladder going below ground level. Also check out the coords I added, you can see the fort in street view. North Head Bunkers

Hi, I was wondering, do know the location of any bunkers or forts around north head. I know about the one with the two gun emplacements, but there is supposed to be a bunker of some sort with a large tunnel leading down into the cliff face with a gun emplacement at the end of it. Your copyedits

Hi, I've noticed that you have been conducting copyedits of a number of articles I have worked with, most recently Battle of San Domingo. I appreciate your interest and efforts and your grammatical changes are welcome, but I have a problem with your habit of breaking paragraphs up to form a number of much smaller sections. I find that any benefits these changes bring are greatly outweighed both by making the article appear less attractive and professional and reducing the ease of reading and understanding by reducing its coherence (when I wrote it I chose the paragraph breaks deliberately to develop seperate themes). I'm not going to conduct wholesale reverts of your work because your grammar changes are helpful, but I will be assessing the broken paragraphs and remerging if I think its appropriate, pending further discussion here or on the article's talk page. Can I ask in future that you make these edits one by one so I can see more clearly what changes you have made? It will make it easier to assess which of your changes I agree with. Will do. However, I would argue that breaking up text makes it easier to read, and makes the article look less ponderous. Note that newspapers, bloggers, and others trying to entice busy readers tend to break up their text. That said, I certainly won't take offense at your merging paragraphs. Thanks for the reply - I would counter that this is neither a newspaper nor a blog but an enecylopedia, and that while breaking up text can make something easier to read it doesn't always. In any in reading or writing an article, I try to think about how a reader interacts with paragraphs and have developed the following rules (they are far from exclusive or omnipotent, but I've always found them a good guideline): 1) Paragraphs should contain one solid theme that links the sentences - this can be a running theme that links several ideas, but the connections should be obvious and the ideas related 2) The lead should bever be less than two or more than four paragraphs - three is usually preferable - this is enought to simulate and inform a passing reader or novice in the subject without seeming to bombard them with too many ideas 3) Length is key - too short and the idea seems underdeveloped or tacked on, too long and it becomes boring - I use a wide browser at home and as a rule of thumb I keep my paragraphs to more than five and less than ten lines on my screen. I find this the easiest size to read at and absorb ideas. 4) The number of paragraphs in a section is important, again it is about find the right balance between too long and too short. I usually use the same principle as with the lead - more than one and less than five. If there are too many then employ appropriate subheadings. 5) The placement of images - always tricky, should be considered partly on the basis of the paragraphs around them, causing as little disruption as possible to the text. I'm not telling you this to try to force you to ahere to this personal guideline, just to explain my position based on my experience.--Jackyd101 (talk) 21:28, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Good guidelines, and I have no quarrel with them at all. I think where we differ in practice, if not in theory, is in our personal sense of what constitutes a solid theme for a paragraph. In the dichotomy (in the sense of "there are two kinds of people, those that think there are two kinds of people, and those that do not) between splitters and lumpers, I tend to be a splitter. Paragraphing aside, in my stylistic edits, I try to make things faster to read. That means: active voice rather than passive; shorter, less complex sentences; and repetition of names to avoid referential terms, i.e., "Admiral So-and-So", rather than "he", etc. Acad Ronin (talk) 14:05, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
