There have been a number of assassination attempts on British Prime Ministers. Only one attempt has been successful and led to the death of an incumbent Prime Minister, but there have numerous attempts and plots on the lives of Prime Ministers.

Successful assassinations[edit]

Spencer Perceval[edit]

The assassination of Spencer Perceval took place on 11 May 1812. The Prime Minister was on his way to the House of Commons to attend an inquiry. Upon entering the lobby, John Bellingham shot Perceval in the chest.

David Cameron[edit]

During a trip to Afghanistan in June 2010, just a month after taking office, Cameron was forced to abandon a trip to a British military base in Helmand Province.[3] Military intelligence intercepted communications that included comments on shooting down the helicopter carrying the Prime Minister. The foiled assassins were identified to be members of Taliban.[4]
