Template:Airlines of the United States

Hi. I just created Template:Airlines of the United States and wanted to know if you thought it was a good idea and also whether you had any edits you think should be made to it. Lots of other countries have such a template, so I think it's in good form, but I still think it could use some work. I'm also wondering also whether it should be split to continental US and Alaska only airline templates, as Alaska in particular has a lot of little airlines, many of which have no articles to their name. Windows Fiji

Hey there. Can you protect Windows Fiji and Windows "Fiji" from re-creation? You'd suggested it as a possibility here, and the page has since been created, deleted, and created again... apparently some wordpress blogger posted some very authoritative-sounding list of features that will be featured in this supposed OS, but... well, you know the content policies well enough to know that this isn't acceptable. :) Protecting this page until such a time that Microsoft's future plans are announced somewhat officially will save us a lot of hassle in having to delete this content over and over. Military brat

Hi Vegas, I have made a proposal on the discussion that I would like you to look at. Basically it is this. Military brats are the largest subcategory of Third Culture Kids (an article needing a fair amount of work.) I propose creating a new category Third Culture Kids and then creating a subcategory on military brats. This will alert those who are unfamiliar with the term that we are dealing with a scientifically studied definable term. It will let people know that we are not dealing with a mere "slang" term that those unfamiliar with the term might find offensive. As for it not being a defining characteristic for most people, the research does say otherwise. I think this compromise, however, will alert people that we are dealing with a scientific usage and think this should fly.Balloonman 17:20, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

US Airways

The fleet table in the US Airways page is simple and dispalys basic, yet needed information. Changing it similar to the Singapore Airlines article will not accomplish anything. Considering what you, Vegaswikian, said in the talk page of US Air, the article shouldn't have America West airlines information displayed in it. The airline is merged, and seperate information is no longer needed. America West information can be displayed in the America West page! America West is now US Airways in passenger terms. Most of the airline is combined, therefore seperate information is not needed, as the www.usairways.com website is combined with America West.--Golich17 03:21, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Re:Casino articles

I didn't create the Bally's article. I changed its name because it was named Bally's Casino which contradicted articles such as Bally's Las Vegas. I did not want to lose the valuable photos in the article, so instead of deleting it I renamed it, also certain articles mistakenly linked to it as it was named Bally's Casino. The only thing valuable in the article were the two photos so I went back into the history and merged the photos into the already established Bally's Atlantic City article, which is what I should have done in the first place but was unsure how to it, but I thought it out and did it. Thanks for the heads up. I see that you, correctly, cleaned up the Category:Casinos in the United States and placed every article in the subcategories. Freddiem 06:16, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

I just want to drop a note commending you on pushing the discussion in new direction with the Pro/Con discussion format instead of the same old polls and long threaded, conflicting comments. While I don't know if we could get a concrete consensus, the discussion seems a bit more organized and it feels like some progress is being made instead of us talking in circles. It was a great idea and I think I'm going to follow your example from here out as a perfect alternative to polling. Might I suggest you consider adding it to the guideline WP:POLL? If you are going to speedy AtTask, please take the time to look through the rest of the products at List of project management software. Re: Manila airports

Yes, but airlines refer to it with different names for example South East Asian Airlines refer to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport as Angeles City. Asian Spirit, Asiana Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines refer to the airport as Clark. Tiger Airways refers to the airport as Manila-Clark. While, AirAsia refers to the airport as Clark-Manila. So we should then refer to it as Clark because most airlines refer to the airport as Clark. -chris^_^ 08:29, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Power stations

I think the power stations in this category are categorized well. I am not very familiar with the U.S. energy sector, but I think it's right to categorize Moss Landing Power Plant as a gas-fired power station (advanced by used technology, but still in principle thermal power plant, which uses natural gas). Fibrominn could be categorized as a biofuel power station or biomass-fired power station (biofuel has little bit wider meaning than biomass). I don't knew if there is more articles about power plants using biofuels.Beagel 21:42, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Although most of your edits have been very good ones, I have to disagree with what you did with Botts' dots. I don't think Elbert Dysart Botts is significant enough to warrant a separate article from Botts dots. Furthermore, by cutting up my carefully drafted prose and then failing to redraft the severed pieces appropriately, you ended up creating two articles that don't really connect very well with each other. It's simply not clear from reading the Botts' dot article (that is, for persons who are neither experienced Wikipedia users nor roadgeeks) that the information about how the dots were actually created is hidden in the article on Mr. Botts himself. The article as it stands merely refers to the problem that warranted the dots' creation and the subsequent legislative mandate, but not how California got from point A to B. And the passage you copied into the Elbert Botts article is not long enough to warrant a "main article link/brief summary" section in the Botts' dot article.

If you don't object within a few weeks (or clean up both articles so that they actually make sense), I'm going to propose a merge of the two articles so Humpty Dumpty can be put back together. --Coolcaesar 07:22, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Horace Fletcher (1849–1919) was an American health-food faddist of the Victorian era who earned the nickname "The Great Masticator,"... wetlands

I know, but hesitated over that to see what other editors might do. In the 'wetlands by state' categories, I am going to combine all the items in the bogs, marshes and swamps of the state--there not being enough of any of these in a given state to justify separate categories for each--in my mind. As a result, the bogs, marches and swamps categories must still contain what they currently contain to provide the distintion they currently have. improper category deletions

You recently deleted Category:Cities in Turkish Kurdistan and Category:Villages in Turkish Kurdistan after closing the mass CFD. This seems improper to me; the result you gave was "No Consensus" and the deleted categories had been populated when the review began -- they were depopulated during the debate by advocates of deletion. Well, they were empty at the time of the deletion for several days. So they were valid canidates for a speedy deletion. If you believe that I should not have deleted these, then you can use Deletion review. However I suggest that you wait for the naming issue on those categories to reach consensus. School address Template:Infobox Education in Canada

Obviously, anybody who considers something (a school, or anything with an address) to be notable, would consider the address worth including. Of course, if you don't think the school should be included, you don't want the adddress included. It seems your sole reason for the removal of the address field in this case, is your long standing position, of wanting to delete almost all school articles. Note, that while there was discussion on the talk page of what to include (like the postal code, which we agreed to exclude), you didn't say anything whatsoever there. • I believe the importance of location is project related. No, I wasn't having difficulty with my browser's rendering of one column. It was just that 3 columns gave a much neater lay-out than a long string of artists in one column. Think I actually inherited that lay-out when I entered two full new sections to that article. —imfred

When I inherited the lay-out there were forced {{column-begin}} and {{column-break}} instructions. I see you have substituted that with a column-count, which in my browser (IE6) renders one lo-o-ong column. The example you cite renders two columns.imfred 13:40, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Standard for 3 digit route shields

There is currently no consensus (that I can find anyway) for the shield size of the 3 digit routes shown in the list of highways numbered XXX. I have brought the issue of establishing a standard for these routes up in the talk page of the U.S. roads wikiproject. Please read my comment here. Basically, the only standard that I'm aware of in relation to this is the one for the Maryland wikiproject. As you can see here (in the routes junctioned section), the standard size for these shields in Maryland is 20px for the 1 and 2 digit routes and 25px for the 3 digit routes. As you find on the actual roads, the 3 digit route shields are bigger than the 2 digit route shields.

Well, OK, I suppose, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The names of the cats are "Restaurants in xxx", not "Restaurants originated in xx" or "Restaurants headquartered in xxx"... and it doesn't seem like the origin/headquarters city is all that interesting anyway. If you're in Las Vegas and hungry, shouldn't Category:Restaurants in Las Vegas give you some hints of places you might try?

If these categories were used to list every location, the list of categories on the page could be longer then the article. Also, wikipedia is not a travel guide. Well, yes, for McDonald's that'd certainly be true, and even for lesser chains like Red Lobster, but that doesn't seem like a problem for a restaurant with only a handful of locations. (But where would the line be drawn?)

OTOH, is the list of all restaurants that "originate" in a particular city really interesting? I suppose it wouldn't be the most boring category in Wikipedia, but...

Perhaps the right answer is to link from Wikipedia off to some related (preferably WikiMedia) travel guide that *would* list all of the restaurants in a city. Shrug. I have a hard time drawing the line between "encyclopedia" and "worthwhile information that doesn't belong in an encyclopedia".

Help Resolving a conflict

I have read the pages about this on wikipedia and I have came to you because you seem to be a person who knows how wikipedia is supposed to work and are most likely 100% neutral on this matter. I am involved in a rather intense edit war with two other editors of the article Miriam Rivera. In the last days the user User:Jokestress has quite reasonably asked for the article to be backed up with more reliable sources. Well I found them and that seems to have placated her. She has acted in 100% reasonable way in all of this. The problem arises in that she has asked in the spirt of resolving the conflict we were having other people who are not 100% neutral it seems to comment on the matter. These being the user User:Longhair and the userUser:Alison in particular who have not bothered to justify anything that they have done. Longhiar being an admin seems to feel no need to discuss anything and I feel is abusing her powers. Is there anything you can do? --Hfarmer 05:03, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

I reverted out this trivia section since that is not an encyclopedic heading. If the information is worth keeping, it should be included in that main article text. If that tidbit is true, the IATA code lists should be updated to include that previous use. Hi, you merged these two articles, but if you follow the Discuss link in "It has been suggested that this article or section be merged into Hors d'œuvre. (Discuss)", you will see that there has in fact been discussion on that Talk page, which is unanimously opposed to the merger, yet you went ahead with the merger without even contributing to the discussion. Could you please join the discussion?

An Hors d'oeuvre is a different concept from an Entree (in the sense of "first course"). In a full meal in France, you have Hors d'oeuvre (a.k.a. amuse-bouche, amuse-gueule, appetizer), then Entree (a.k.a. premier plat = first course), then Main Course (then Cheese then Dessert). In Italy, they are called Antipasto, Primo, Secondo. U.S. usage is of course somewhat different, since "Entree" has come to mean "Main Course", but that's another matter.... --Macrakis 14:40, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I think it makes sense to keep entrée for the (UK/international) sense of "first course", with a dabnote for "main course" and a dab page for all the rest. After all, EN Wikipedia shouldn't assume that US usage is the default. As for "entrée" in the sense of "an entrée into society" etc., that currently doesn't have an article, and I don't think it will ever need one -- that is a wiktionary entry, not an encyclopedia entry.

On the other hand, although it might make logical sense to merge hors d'oeuvre (which already includes appetizer) and antipasto, I suspect that there will be resistance to that. --Macrakis 20:49, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Please don't add categories on a redirect page (as per your edits on Domino Records, for example). See Wikipedia:Redirect: Redirects should not normally contain categories that would fit on the target page because it can result in duplicate listings of the same page within a category. The Diller article had a lot more detailed information than the pickleball article, that's why I proposed it for merger. Your deletion means that info is lost. Would you consider reverting and trying to merge? I have no problem with deleting Diller as it does not assert notability as a company, though perhaps a notability tag allows the author to add information indicating notability (perhaps they are the only pickleball supplier in the US, which might lead to the independent, non trivial coverage required to establish notability). deleting categories

I think that your suggestion that it was appropriate to put a subcategory of Jewish sportspeople to a deletion vote was wrongheaded. We have addressed all of the issues raised already, by the same editor who now raises them again. I think ProveIt is abusing Wikipedia. He has already suggested that another category of Jewish athlete be deleted -- Jewish Fencers. His suggestion was not accepted. He raises no new arguments here. It is a waste of everyone's time to therefore have to go through the same process, to reach the same conclusion. This discussion also took place with the category Jewish sportspeople. Oregon Zip Codes

Vegas, I like the table you created for 979 in the Oregon zip codes. I started inputting and right away ran into a problem. The Adrian post office was founded in 1911 with the name Riverview. It was changed to the current name in 1919. Some post offices (same office) changed names 4 times. This would be a problem more specifically addressed if we were tackling all of the post offices that were ever in Oregon (post offices started in the late 1800's, zip codes came around in 1963). All I'm doing is trying to track all the zip codes that have ever graced Oregon's soil. Maybe date assigned should be removed as it opens too big a can of worms. Splits in zip codes rarely happen, though there are a few cases. Perhaps the following categories:

Zip, Post office, Other communities served (or something to that effect), Closed to (where I can write in a date if known), and Notes where anything else relevant can go.

• Here in Oregon we rarely have new zip codes. To have a 'date zip added' category would be useless as most of the zips would have a date of 1963. Very few have been added since then. In consolidation, one of the prior zips is used. This is why I suggested having the comments area to note such rare events. I'm not sure how I feel about putting the zip in the 'closed to' box. For instance, when the North Portland branch (97043) closed out to Portland, which zip code should I use? That post office closed to the Kenton branch of Portland, but Kenton serves 97211 and 97217. Is it more significant to say that it was closed to 97211 or 97217? Unfortunately, 97043 did not align perfectly with either zip code. I would prefer to say which post office name it closed to, whether that be a one station city, or a particular branch of that city. • Ah, I see, you didn't say that you were creating a table style for all cases. Given that, fine, go ahead and add whatever categories, but I suggest making the heading titles short. So what happens when the table is used to expand to a history of post offices, and not just zip codes? Zip codes only came into use in 1963. We would HAVE to say that in 1945 post office A closed out to post office B. We certainly couldn't reference it with zip codes. In any event, do what you like on whichever state page you choose to maintain, but we really should use names, with or without zip codes in the 'closed to', 'split from', 'merged with' or 'threw pies at' categories. • I like where this is going. I changed the format of 'closed to' to City, Zip as per USPS format. Also, I'm still not satisfied with the 'established' box. This is open to interpretation of either the zip code or the post office. The post office could have been established 1896, and the zip given 1963. Or the post office could have been established 1906 and closed 1907 (if the table eventually includes all post offices). Or the post office AND zip code could have been established in 2006. Should it be 'PO established' and 'Zip established'? What about Denio? This PO was established in Oregon in 1888, and then we lost it to you :) in 1950. In 1963 it gained its zip. My entries are derived not from a book, but an aviation magazine (one of the best known and most authoritative in the world). I am trying to update over 1600 airline articles from 3 editions of the magazine. Obviously this is very time consuming and the reference added is the best that time allows in the circumstances. Speedy tags on Prime healthcare services

Just a note, would you mind only putting one speedy tag on a page please? It still get's listed the same whether it has one tag or five hundred for deletion, and it makes the deleting admins job longer if he/she has to read through 4 or 5 tags. Non-articles in article space issues

I've moved your airline code "sub-articles" into the template space, as otherwise we'll have an infinite loop wherein my bot tags them as uncategorised, someone categorises them, and you remove the categories. Or else I try to guess some rule for creating some sort of exception for a new class of article-space articles that aren't articles, which seems potentially open-ended if this sort of entity is kept in that namespace. There's also the issue of having "articles" that don't even display properly on their own due to the way they're coded. I'm not sure the situation-as-just-changed is ideal either, but having non-templates in the template space seems somehow less problematic than having non-articles in that one. Trouble with that is that the article space doesn't have subpages any more: for example, Airline codes/Y isn't a subpage of Airline codes, it's a different top-level page, that just happens to have a "/" in the title. (That wasn't always the case, and in most of the namespaces, it still isn't.) There's probably some need for an additional namespace for this sort of thing, plus other "article-like" pages that aren't articles in their own right (such as article sandboxes and temporary working versions). Borough categories

I'm contacting you because you left a comment at: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_June_9#OldhamI believe the categorisation across wikipedia should be consistent, and if you check the US categorisation they use the full county/borough names i.e. the Madison county category is called 'Madison County' as opposed to 'Madison'. Re this edit of yours: [6] Please don't edit pages which have been protected due to a dispute. It's my understanding that the only reason Template:Trivia was edit-protected was because of a dispute/edit war. Therefore, the only appropriate actions are either to (a) remove the protection because the dispute is over, or (b) leave the page alone because the dispute is continuing. Interstate 215 (Nevada) Changes

That's a tricky one. The SR-146 signs were still up on parts of I-215 when I moved out of Las Vegas in 2005. I couldn't be sure if they had been taken down yet. Nonetheless, SR-146 is officially removed from I-215 whether the signs are down or not. Unfortunately, Nevada DOT is sloppy about this and other examples of the same problem exist on other highways. Maybe we can reconcile accuracy and reality by something to the effect of "SR-146 has been officially removed from I-215 by Nevada DOT but signs still were posted as of 2007"? Every NDOT Mileage Log since January 2001 has listed the western terminus of I-215 at I-15. Various publications from Clark County Public Works (and their website in the past) have also stated in one form or another: "This sign [picture of CC-215 shield] identifies the beltway facilities controlled by Clark County and extend west of I-15." I do not recall ever personally seeing any I-215 shields west of I-15 on the beltway. If the signs had existed, one would question why signage on the I-15 ramps to the beltway merely stated "Decatur Blvd" instead of "I-215 West" prior to the opening of the 215 frontage roads. When the frontage roads opened, the "Decatur Blvd" signs were changed to "CC-215 West" and the CC-215 shield was added to exit and advanced mileage signs on the I-15.

The county has always maintained that the beltway was built with local dollars, and not with any federal funds. I'm not sure if state or federal funds were used on the I-15 interchange or not, but its unlikely that federal dollars were spent to extend the beltway from I-15 to Decatur given that FHWA doesn't even recognize current I-215 as an interstate highway on their website. Again, sorry to bother you about it - when I saw the comment, I wasn't concerned about you, but instead that perhaps some sort of action had been filed against me by the editor. What you've explained makes perfect sense. On a related note, I'd appreciate any input you might have as to how I handled things. From what I can see, the page was a pretty clear-cut redirect (or delete). It is about the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii, for which there is already an article (Queen Charlotte Islands). It has some information about the Haida people, who are covered in detail in Haida. It has no references, is written in a non-encyclopedic manner, and closely parallels the information at the PureWest and Blue Water Adventures web sites. The editor in question (BCR123) has also been cautioned by two different editors for adding inappropriate external links for a QCI-based tourism company. Thanks for the reply. In this case, it wasn't a content dispute so much as a article fork, created and edited solely by the editor in question, that sprang up shortly after he/she was reverted/cautioned for adding spam links. I don't think it is AN/I material... just a series of insults and insinuations. Template:Trivia

I hope you don't perceive my actions as slighting your attempts to achieve consensus at Template:Trivia. I agree that the change you made on 17 June seemed to have consensus at that time. It would have been better if the opposing party had spoken up before then, but the opposition they've expressed since suggests to me that consensus was ultimately not achieved.

I also agree with you that the template should not be used at the top of the page, but again, I am not certain this position represents consensus. I also feel the "opposition" has displayed a frustrating degree of dogmatism. Nonetheless, I'd like to engage them as much as I can in seeking out a common ground instead of having to go back to protecting the template on one Wrong Version or another.--Father Goose 00:36, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
