Train Editing Toolbox[edit]

This is a general collection of resources, advice, and things to remember for editing in the area of trains. Primarily a resource for myself but anyone can refer to it. This will mostly focus on New England railroads, where I primarily edit.

Useful categories[edit]

  • Railway companies established in YEAR
  • Railway companies disestablished in YEAR
  • Predecessors of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (there's over 100 of these!)
  • Defunct STATE railroads
  • STATE railroads

Things to remember[edit]

Company operating dates: I generally start with the year the first trains ran, and end when the company ceased to operate independently. I make a separate mention for when the company ceased to exist, if it was leased before being purchased and dissolved.

For companies that stopped being independent early, generally the best candidates for photos are preserved stations/depots.

When searching newspaper archives, always be on the lookout for alternative names or search strings which may yield more results.
