Plot[edit]
Part 1: "Nationwide Manhunt"[edit]
Lieutenant Olivia Benson calls Sargent Hank Voight in Chicago and says that Gregory Yates has new information to share regarding missing persons cases form Chicago and recently found human remains but that he will only speak to Detective Amanda Rollins. Benson doesn't want to send her since she recently gave birth. Voight offers to send Detectives Erin Lindsay and Antonio Dawson in place of Rollins hoping he'll speak to Lindsay. Lindsay and Dawson travel to New York City and visit Yates in prison but he insists on only talking to Rollins. Benson agrees to let Rollins visit Yates and sends Detective Dominick Carisi, Jr. with her. Yates tells Rollins that the only way he will talk is if she gets him transferred to the honor block for inmates with good behavior. Although being initially reluctant because Carl Rudnick, who Yates has criminal history with, is in the honor block, the prison warden agrees to transfer him. The next day Benson, Sargent Mike Dodds and Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba visit the prison in hope that Yates will ultimately give up any information he has. The prison guard sent to retrieve Yates finds both Yates and Rudnick missing along with a hole in the wall of Rudnick's prison cell. Benson and Dodds interview Rudnick's cell mate and track Yates and Rudnick's escape route through a pipe from the boiler room to an unsealed hatch outside the prison where they find two murdered electricians. The New York Police Department team up with other state and federal agencies to begin a manhunt for Yates and Rudnick. Law enforcement are ultimately led to a lake where Rudnick is found seriously injured in a boat. Rudnick is interrogated in the hospital and reveals the rest of his escape plan. Lindsay and Dodds come across an empty state police car where Lindsay finds a murdered trooper and notices that his gun is missing. Dodds then gets shot in the shoulder and Lindsay pursues the shooter into the woods where she finds a log cabin with a scared young child inside. Gunshots are heard outside where Lindsay investigates and almost gets run over by Yates driving away in another pickup truck which he ultimately escapes in. Lindsay also finds the child's murdered father with a note in his mouth from Yates that reads "See you back home."
Part 2: "The Song of Gregory William Yates"[edit]
Lindsay and Dawson return to Chicago where the Intelligence Unit is briefed on the case. Benson, still in New York, informs Voight, Lindsay, and Dawson that a cell phone was found in Yates cell with a history that leads back to Chicago. Sargant Trudy Platt interrupts to say that Officers Kim Burgess and Sean Roman found a triple homicide in an apartment and suspects Yates could be the person behind them. Benson and Detective Fin Tutuola head to Chicago to assist in the investigation. Yates then kidnaps a college professor named Nellie Carr who the Chicago Police Department begins looking for. Platt gives a press conference regarding updates around the case. Yates hires a homeless woman to deliver an unmarked box addressed to the twenty-first district. The bomb squad inspects the box and when it is declared safe a severed hand with a note for Lindsay is found inside. Yates calls Lindsay and he challenges her to find him. Lindsay recognizes a photo from her call with Yates and knows that he is in her apartment. Intelligence searches Lindsay's apartment only finding that Nellie was locked in the closest and that Yates is in the wind. Benson and Tutuola arrive in Chicago and Benson realizes that Nellie is Yates brother and the team suspects he is seeking revenge for getting put up for adoption. Lindsay feels guilty and blames herself for the triple homicide since she couldn't stop Yates at the cabin in New York and also blames Voight for benching her. Yates kidnaps his and Nellie's father and calls Lindsay once again. The call is tracked and found to be coming from Yates' childhood home. Lindsay heads to the house alone and goes in against Voight's wishes. At the house she finds Yates and his father inside the house where Yates is preparing to murder his father. Lindsay tries to keep Yates from killing his father as Voight arrives at the house. Yates ultimately murders his father and picks up a knife. Lindsay orders Yates to surrender but is required to shoot and kill him as he lunges towards her. Platt gives a final press conference to the public about the case as Benson and Fin prepare to return to New York.
