Lindale as a speed trap:

  • Background: [1] "But the tiny courtroom has a big reputation, as the dreaded way station for all unfortunate souls caught in Northeast Ohio's most infamous "speed trap." ... That's how a 117-person village like Linndale can afford a police force with as many cars as blocks they patrol. Last year alone, the city raked in almost $1 million."
  • Lindale Mayor's Court: [2] "Linndale may be best known for its traffic court. This tiny village of about one hundred, with all of about a tenth of a square mile, handles more cases than just about any other Mayor's Court in the state of Ohio. The village just happens to have a squib of I-71 whizzing through. The speed trap here is legendary."
  • Most active mayors court:
    • [3] "In addition, Linndale mayor’s court in Cuyahoga County again led the state in cases per 100 residents with 3,863, just as it did for 2007. Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer has consistently pushed for legislation that would incorporate mayor’s courts in the judicial system under the authority of the Supreme Court. The most recent attempt to pass legislation did not make it to a floor vote in the 127th General Assembly."

State (1999), 85 Ohio St. 3d 52 -- Statute barring municipalities with less that 880 yards of interstate from enforcing their weight and speeding ordinances on the highway found not to be a general law as it purports only to limit the constitutional authority of municipalities to so regulate.
