Selected Work (May 2024) 2024 Sulphur tornado[edit]
During the early hours of April 28, 2024, a large and destructive EF3 tornado struck the community of Sulphur, Oklahoma, killing 1 person and injuring 40 others. This was the second major tornado to strike Sulphur on April 28, and was part of the tornado outbreak sequence of April 25–28, 2024. A state of emergency was issued for Carter, Cotton, Garfield, Hughes, Kay, Lincoln, Love, Murray (where Sulphur is located), Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Payne and Pontotoc counties. The tornado caused extreme damage to the downtown area of Sulphur, and it has been declared as catastrophic.[edit]
The tornado first began forming and touched down right outside of Sulphur, moving northeast at 35+MPH, hitting fields at EF0 and EF1 intensity. It crossed a road leading into Sulphur, causing tree damage before it began to immediately track into the town center. The tornado was invisible at this point due to a large power outage, and was mainly unwarned. As it went through Central Sulphur, it debarked trees, leveled sturdy brick buildings and lodged tree branches in solid concrete. The tornado took on a rain-wrapped wedge-like shape as It hit commercial areas, including a laundromat which sustained EFU damage and a hotel which was directly impacted at an unknown intensity. It then tracked into small residential areas, killing 2 people, and shifting houses off of foundations. It then rapidly weakened and dissipated an unknown distance away from Sulphur.[edit]
