Founding[edit]

Rosco was founded in 1910 by Sydney kelsey Rosenstein, a chemist, at the age of 24. Unsure of the direction of the company, Rosentein called the company "Rosco Laboratories", the " R O S" from Rosenstein and the " C O" from "company"

Rosenstein's first productions were "Colorine", a transparent lacquer for coloring small light bulbs and "Opaline", a translucent lacquer. At this time frosted light bulb were not available. Colorine is still manufactuered by Rosco. Other products produced included film cement for splicing motion picture film. Film cement was highly flammable and was discontinued in the 1970's.

In 1952 Rosenstein sold the company to Stan Miller and Len Kraft. Miller was a salesman for Allied Chemical and Dye (a vendor) while Kraft (Miller's cousin) wasa n accountant.

1973: Academy Award (Cinegel) Development of a complete system of lighting control filters. 1984: Academy Award (Fog Fluid) Development of an improved non-toxic fluid for creating fog and smoke for motion picture production. 1999: Academy Award (Calcolor)Calibrated Color Effects Filters 2001: Academy Award (Day/Night Backdrops) A single, reliable backing for both day and night shots.
