Seasonal floods and droughts in China[edit]

Seasonal floods and droughts in China result in large numbers deaths each year, and significant economic hardships.

Overview[edit]

Between 108 BC and 1911 AD there were no fewer than 1,828 major famines in China, or one nearly every year in one or another province; however, the famines varied greatly in severity.[1][2] Each year in China the middle of the year is wet - while the ends of the year are dry. thus droughts tend to occur over more than one calendar year, while flood seasons tend to be limited to one year at a time. 37,000 of China's 85,000 dams had "ailments and dangers" the bulk being built between 1950 and 1970s, with the problems of inherent design defects and poor maintainence.[3]
