this is ridiculous. It was put there as a temporary icon until someone came up with something more neutral. Four months ago. The first complaint here was two months ago. So why didn't anyone change it? Grutness...wha? 05:12, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, maybe it is a low traffic entry...there are alredy more specific stubs for the 6 bigger countries of the subcontinent. I stumble on it myself by means of a Random article. Besides, some people will certainly like it while others may not care enough to do it...or lack the knowledge to deal with html syntax.

And it didn't state it was a temporary icon, anyway so I chose not to be bold to avoid edit wars.

I found the argument by User:Grutness on Image:CheHigh.jpg compelling. Regardless of one's feelings for Guevara politically, his image is immediately recognizable, which is the purpose of an icon. I'm not sure how an image of Bernardo O'Higgins is any more or less NPOV than one of anyone else. It's not like we're endorsing Guevara's viewpoints by using his image here - we merely note his existence and historical relevance. --April Arcus 18:08, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If we went on historical importance and recognizability alone, Hitler would be the best icon to use for Western Europe, Lenin for Eastern Europe, Osama bin Laden for West Asia, Genghis Khan or Mao for East Asia, etc. But those figures are far more specific to Nazism, Communism, terrorism, and the Mongol Empire, just as Che is more specific to Cuba's revolution and the failed attempts to spread it to other parts of the world. If you must have a revolutionary rather than an artifact or a map or a flag or a civilian, Bolívar would be a far better choice as a someone of historical, rather than pop-cultural, importance.
