Note: When using parameters, avoid the ambiguous abbreviation "N/A", and instead use "unknown" or "none", or simply leave blank. All subjective or qualitative judgements and numerical quantities or statistics must be cited to a reliable source.

The infobox is intended as a quick reference. Don't add non-data items, like question marks, “none”, “see text” or links to article sections (the article's table of contents already does this). Only add “unknown” to assert that an information point is unknowable, not as a placeholder to show that it is missing from the article. Choose a representative model and indicate what it is with the spec_label parameter, instead of listing multiple data items in one field.

Where multiple values are shown, separate them using {{Plainlist}} or {{Flatlist}}.

The template can also be used for general categories of NVD by including only some general characteristics.

General parameters:

  • name – the formal name of the NVD.
  • imageoptional – an image of the NVD. The image must be given in the form [[File:Example.jpg|300px]]; in particular, the thumb attribute must not be selected.
  • captionoptional – the text to be placed below the image.
  • originoptional – the country or place where the NVD originated or was first manufactured.
  • typeoptional – the type of NVD (e.g. "weapon-mounted"/"clip-on", "monocle”, "dual-tube", "fusion", "panoramic", "foveated WFoV NVG", "diverging image tube WFoV NVG" etc.).
  • Categoryoptional – Military, civilian, aerospace, scientific, etc.

Type selection parameters (these parameters control whether—and how—particular specification fields will be displayed; multiple ones may be enabled where appropriate):

  • is_thermal – "yes" if the NVD is of a Thermal type; must be left blank otherwise. If fusion, tick yes
  • is_tube – "yes" if the NVD uses an IIT tube; must be left blank otherwise. If fusion, tick yes
  • is_digital – "yes" if the NVD is of a Digital type (and not Thermal or SWIR); must be left blank otherwise.
  • is_iit – "yes" if it's describing the image intensifier tube and not the entire NVD; must be left blank otherwise.

Service history parameters:

  • serviceoptional – the period (usually given in years) when the NVD was in service.
  • used_byoptional – the countries, armed forces, or other groups using the NVD; this may be omitted for NVDs employed only in their country of origin.
  • warsoptional – any wars during which the NVD saw service.

Production history parameters:

  • designeroptional – the person or group responsible for designing the NVD (Not the IIT).
  • design_dateoptional – the date (usually given as a year) when the NVD was designed.
  • manufactureroptional – the manufacturer of the NVD.
  • unit_costoptional – the unit cost of the NVD in US dollars; this should only be indicated for NVDs currently being produced.
  • production_dateoptional – the period (usually given in years) when the NVD was produced.
  • numberoptional – the number of NVDs of this type that were manufactured.
  • variantsoptional – any variant models of the NVD including "offshoots".

General specification parameters:

  • spec_labeloptional – a label for the specifications, to be used when data for only a particular variant is being shown in the infobox; should be left blank otherwise.
  • weightoptional – the weight of the NVD.
  • dimensionsoptional – the largest dimensions of the NVD. L × H × W in centimeters.
  • adapter - optional - what type of helmet adapter it uses (eg. Bayonet, Dovetail, ANVIS ball-detent, Proprietary, etc)
  • batt_config - optional - battery configuration: battery onboard, battery pack, both. Can also specify number/type of batteries (eg. Onboard battery, Battery pack, Onboard or battery pack; 2x AA)
  • bridge_type - optional - if dual tube NVD, are the tubes set in a fixed bridge (eg. AVS-6/9) or articulating bridge (eg. PVS-31A)
  • resolutionoptional – The resolution of the NVD in lp/mm.
  • use_timeoptional – The usable operation time
  • modeoptional – Mode of operation. Passive, active or dual-mode.
  • wavelength - optional - the wavelengths of light the device can image. Gen III and III+ are 500-900nm. OOB may be 350-1100nm. Thermal often are MWIR 3-5μm or LWIR 7-14μm.
