Julie Anne Genter, one of the 25 new MPs

  • Reviewed: Template:Did you know nominations/RetractionWatch
  • Comment: General elections were held in New Zealand on 26 November, and the NZ politics task force had stubs prepared in the task force space for those contenders who were likely to enter Parliament. The stubs were moved into mainspace late that day (NZ time) or on the Sunday. Since then, we have collaborated to get as many of the articles DYK ready, and seven bios should all meet that requirement now that 5 days are up. Feel free to view the collaboration space. Please note that for multiple nominations like this one, hook length gets determined by not counting characters for the second target article onwards, so the phrase "that 25 new MPs were elected to the 50th New Zealand Parliament, including Julie Anne Genter and (both Greens), (Labour), and (both National), and (both NZ First)?" is the one that is relevant and that is well below the 200 character limit. We will now try and do a 5 times expansion on the 50th New Zealand Parliament article. The hook fact '25 new MPs' will be referenced there, and is already referenced in the Julie Anne Genter article. I should note here that all of this is based on preliminary results, with the final results due to be released on 10 December. So if the number of new MPs changes, then we can adjust this (assuming that this doesn't go through a rapid approval process, which doesn't usually happen with politics articles here...). Further note that it is theoretically possible that not all of the MPs listed here will in fact be confirmed (notably Genter, as she's the last person on the Green list who made it in), but all the commentators assume that those listed here will be in Parliament.   • hook: Could you point out to me which footnote lists the 25 new MPs? I'm unable to find any names listed in Footnote 9. Plus, there should be a footnote on each box, showing where you got these party lists.
  • Ok, with the final results now out, it's now 26 new MPs. The lowest ranked National MP has fallen off the list (he was already in Parliament before), and a new Green MP has joined the newcomers. That's explained and referenced in the 50th Parliament article. I've amended the hook accordingly. I'll tend to the other questions once I've had some shuteye - good night.   • Many of the articles change a bit, so reference to a particular footnote number is a temporary thing and I still don't know which article to look in. Anyway, this ref[1] contained in the 50th Parliament article has the names of the 25 new MPs, reflecting the situation after the preliminary counts. With the final counts, there were some changes, as the 50th Parliament article outlines, with some MPs having made it after all, and others dropping off the list. All the changes affected those who had been MPs previously, with the one exception of Mojo Mathers, who joined the newcomers. So now we have 26 new MPs. By the way, there is a separate DYK nomination for Mathers, and that article is currently in Queue 1. Schwede66 18:17, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
  • Regarding "footnote on each box", I suppose you refer to the Template:NZ parlbox. I concur that the list placing ought to be referenced, but the template itself doesn't make any provision for that, and last time we ran a cat scan, we had parlboxes with about 600 MP pages (of 1400 MPs in total) and none of them have these footnotes. Can I suggest that the list placing be referenced in the article itself? I'll go through the articles and add that. Schwede66 17:41, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

  • Oops, I missed that. Age, length OK. But do you have a reference to her being elected in 2011? You seem to be citing a list from 2008-11, and an article saying that the Greens gained 13 seats. Yoninah (talk) 17:57, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Regarding your question as to why none of the write ups links to 50th Parliament (yet), the answer is quite simple - that article was written last. There is a link in each of the parlboxes, though. Sourcing issues. Denise Roche has a significant amount of material taken verbatim from an unreliable source. Furthermore, it has an attribution template claiming that that source is PD; it isn't. Spotchecks of other articles in this hook turned up further concerns: for example, in Paul Goldsmith, the section "He was elected to the Auckland City Council in 2007 and served as the deputy finance chairman and the community services chairman during John Banks' mayoralty. He became noted for his hard stance on homeless people, graffiti and race-based seats." is near-verbatim from the source (in fact, the only difference is the substitution of "John" for "Mr."). Other articles have less egregious but still concerning close paraphrases on a quick check. Nikkimaria (talk) 22:39, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

I've corrected the attribution in Denise Roche to Waihekepedia, and have replaced Waihekepedia with other sources, except for one paragraph which I have commented out until such time as suitable sources can be found.-gadfium 03:40, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
Paul Goldsmith (politician) should be all good to go now; apologies for the close paraphrasing (not my doing!). Are there any other articles that caught your critical eye? I'm happy to have a look myself, but if you can point me in the right direction, that would be helpful. The series of articles in this hook was produced by quite a few editors, so it can be a bit challenging for me as nominator to stay on top of things. Schwede66 18:39, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
