Hawaii – Tahiti relations[edit]

Kingdoms of Hawaii and Tahiti

  • Length and date are fine, and the article is extremely interesting. I can AGF on sources, but the hook doesn't do the article justice, and some content issues remain. I would suggest:
ALT 1: ... that Hawaii – Tahiti relations during the 1800s involved the betrothal of a Tahitian Princess to Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, later King Kamehameha V....?
This is sourced, and could also be supported by the image File:Prince Lot Kapuaiwa on tour.jpg. -- 202.124.72.69 (talk) 08:46, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Or we could use the image File:John Mix Stanley, Portrait of Princess Manaiula Tehuiarii, Wife of High Chief William Kealaloa Kahanui Sumner, ca. 1848, Honolulu Academy of Arts.jpg since that was the Princess, Lot Kapuaiwa was betrothed to.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 09:39, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
That would make a much better DYK image, supporting:
ALT 2: ... that Hawaii – Tahiti relations during the 1800s included the betrothal of Tahitian Princess Manaiula Tehuiarii (pictured) to Prince Lot Kapuāiwa, later King Kamehameha V....?
In the meantime I'll try creating an article for Manaiula Tehuiarii.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 10:33, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
I would like to see that betrothal story confirmed, though, since that new article raises some questions. -- 202.124.72.210 (talk) 13:32, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
The betrothal story mentioning Manaiula is in the Mid Atlantic Magazine, I cited, which is the only source that mentions any other princesses other than Ninito, so I doubt it's accuracy. I think it might be incorrect since Nacny Sumner was born in 1839 and the painting was dated to 1848. I proposed we strike the third hook proposal and used the second proposal instead.
The whole betrothal issue needs some investigation, with some appropriate edits to the article. Certainly both ALT1 and AL2 both look dubious. How about the more solidly based:
ALT 3: ... that Hawaii – Tahiti relations during the 1800s included a proposal that Hawaiian Princess Kekāuluohi marry a son of Tahitian King Pōmare I....?
I have confirmed the source for this, and two possible pictures suggest themselves. 202.124.72.68 (talk) 00:25, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
Okay.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 18:41, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
ALT 4: ... that Hawaii – Tahiti relations during the 1800s included a proposal that Hawaiian Princess Kekāuluohi (pictured) marry a son of Tahitian King Pōmare I....?
Following changes to the article, ALT 3 or ALT 4 is good to go, with File:Kekauluohi Ka'ahumanu III.jpg as the picture for ALT 4. -- 202.124.73.56 (talk) 05:44, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
