Oh man, this article needs HELP! I'm not sure how to make the infobox do some of the stuff that I've seen in other singles. Edit away, please! — Wwagner 17:32, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I figured it out. Wikipedia:WikiProject Songs is what I needed to find. Though it doesn't appear that the songs project has a nice "hey check out our project" template like the albums one above. — Wwagner 03:20, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New wave[edit]

TwinToneDigital ref challenged[edit]

Msftwin95 has been adding a citation to https://www.twintonedigital.com/information-society to support the genres of synth-pop and freestyle. The two major problems with this citation is that it has no listed author, and it misquotes another webpage by AllMusic.

First off, Twin/Tone Records is a record company. The website is apparently run by Paul Stark and Peter Jesperson who are two of the three record company founders.

The page in question quotes John Bush's biography of Information Society by AllMusic. The quoted portion is here:

Information Society (also known as InSoc) is an American band from Minneapolis–Saint Paul, initially active from 1982 to 1997, primarily consisting of Kurt Harland Larson, Paul Robb, and James Cassidy; the latter two reconvened the band in 2006, initially with Christopher Anton as lead vocalist, then with Harland rejoining them as lead vocalist by 2008.

The group's breakout single was 1988's "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)", a synth-pop and freestyle song, which spent 39 weeks on the dance chart, going straight to number one and would also peak at number three on the Hot 100 pop chart. The track included a vocal sample of Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from Star Trek, saying "pure energy".

The band has been honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, recognizing performers that have played sold-out shows or have otherwise demonstrated a major contribution to the culture at the iconic venue. Receiving a star "might be the most prestigious public honor an artist can receive in Minneapolis," according to journalist Steve Marsh.

The actual AllMusic page about the band says the following:

An agreeable dance outfit with ties to industrial music, techno, and funk plus an equally appreciable pop sense, Information Society hit the dance clubs and later the charts with their infectious breakout single, 1988's "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)." The group, a quartet formed in Minneapolis by James Cassidy, Paul Robb, Kurt Harland (aka Kurt Valaquen), and Amanda Kramer, signed to Tommy Boy Records a few years later and recorded a self-titled debut album. The single "What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy)," propelled by a Leonard Nimoy sample and Valaquen's smooth, assured vocals, became a club hit and eventually landed at number three in the pop charts.

The genre of freestyle music does not appear in John Bush's biography, nor does the genre of synth-pop. Obviously, the Twin/Tone Records page is mangling the AllMusic material, mashing it up with something by Steve Marsh that doesn't even mention Information Society at all. This is a complete steaming pile of a source, with no listed author and very poorly composed text.

The description on TwinTone is identical to to the first three paragraphs of the Information Society Wikipedia page, so either one was copied from the other, with TwinTone miscrediting AllMusic as the source, or they were both copied from an AllMusic source that is no longer in existence. I think the former is more likely. The only difference between the TwinTone and Wikipedia pages, prior to my edit today, was that the TwinTone page described 'What's on Your Mind' as both a synth-pop and freestyle song while Wikipedia described it only as as synth-pop song. The reason for this discrepancy is that on 31 March 2021, an anonymous Wikipedia editor randomly removed the word 'freestyle' from the Wikipedia page for no specified reason. My edit has the effect of restoring the page to its former state before this random act of vandalism. Since the song is now once again correctly described as synth-pop and freestyle on the band page, I have edited the page for the song itself to match. It looks like you are happy to include a WP:CIRCULAR reference. I'm not! If the Twin/Tone people copied from Wikipedia, and I agree it looks like they did, then we cannot use them.
I don't think it's worthwhile to examine previous versions of the article to hunt for unreferenced genres. By far the best strategy is to hunt for genres published in the media. AllMusic calls it a "dance club" song so we can safely say it is dance music. Spin magazine said "dance record", so that's more support. We definitely need to put it in the dance music category. Fair enough. I've found a couple of sources describing it as Freestyle, one of which also describes it as synth-pop, so I'll put those in place of the current source. Hopefully they're high-quality enough. One of them also describes the genres for the album, so I'll replace the current (unsourced) genres with what the piece says. Your "couple of sources" are self-published, not usable. Again, AllMusic and Spin say that it's a dance song.
