Details and editing[edit]

I've added some details and edited everything for style. The article doesn't read like an advertisement to me anymore, so I've removed the NPOV/advertisement tag. Perhaps a criticism section would be appropriate if NPOV is still an issue. If we get much more information on the Kumon Method it might be appropriate to shift that into a separate page, as this article is supposed to be on the person. --The Famous Movie Director 03:49, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]


The poor grade his son got in elementery mathematics was a 95 out of 100. That was in second grade. Perhaps that should be mentioned. The son got to Calculus in 6th grade. - The Kumon Employee whose heard the story at group meeting and Associate


The article as it is right now reads as a brochure from the Kumon centers, Is there any criticisms of the method? Any dissenting opinions? I know that in Mexico, many grade school teachers have spoken against Kumon centers, because they apparently tell kids something like "everything they teach you at school about math is wrong!"... There is also the apparent side-effect where an 4th grade kid who can do square roots and is starting on algebra becomes bored at school when asked to do multiplication and division... In response to the above: I am also a Kumon instructor; we do not tell kids that what they learn in math in school is "wrong". We just help them master math basics and reading comprehension, to simplify it. We also help them do math such as fractions by using and working with smaller numbers (for instance, you can add and subtract mixed numbers without converting them to improper fractions first--who knew?!--the result is, you use much smaller numbers that are much easier to work with and manipulate, and eliminate unnecessary steps. The kids who are advanced above grade level don't get bored in school, they simply can finish their homework/classwork faster and with more ease, which leaves time to work on other subjects or extracurricular activities. I have yet to hear a complaint from one of my students regarding school being easier for them.

And with regard to the 95% that Toru's son received, true, the "poor" grade that Takeshi received was a 95, but keep in mind he had nothing but 100% prior to that, and this was basic, simple, second-grade stuff. The Kumons were concerned that he was beginning to miss certain concepts, and so they caught the problem and fixed it before it became too great. True, Takeshi was doing calculus by 6th grade, because he was allowed to progress at his own pace. In America, most people wait until the kids are extremely behind and struggling before they do anything about it. I could write countless Kumon success stories here from former Kumon students, but I simply do not have the time!  :) I do the Kumon program myself and have been amazed at how my skills have advanced; I am a true believer in the method as supplemental education.

Split of Article[edit]

I belive that this article should be split into two articles; one for Toru Kumon, the other for the actual Kumon method around the world and about the Kumon levels. Cyberguy410 19:30, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this article should be split into different articles. I think it would be better to have an article about the creator, Toru Kumon, and then another for his creation, the Kumon method.--Chaz 23:32, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
