At school in the 1960s, I remember hearing this song and being told that it was connected to a switch in the herring migrations away from waters fished by the Hanseatic League and into English and Scottish waters.
I've got no source for this so I have not included it. They were defnitely involved in the herring trade and at one time controlled it. They fought a war with Denmark in which control of herring fisheries was a major issue.[1] But I have no basis for saying that this has anything to do with the song.
