Info / notes[edit]

Hopefully this will be useful for this article's eventual author.

Who is he?[edit]

This is the famous guy: http://www.blackpast.org/?q=aah/morris-robert-sr-1823-1882

Some sources will say his name is actually "Robert Morris Jr." -- however, according to Emancipation: The Making of the Black Lawyer, 1844-1944 (http://books.google.com/books?id=1lOIjQUG4aoC&pg=PA120&dq=Dictionary+of+American+Negro+Biography&hl=en&ei=31BkTc6TCo-I8wTx_qSqAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CDUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=%22robert%20morris%20jr%22&f=false):

Some confusion surrounds Robert Morris's name. On several occasions, he signed his name Robert Morris Jr., and this name appeared in Boston newspapers and on his court pleadings; the confusion has been carried forward by scholars of the period. Technically, however, Robert Morris was not a "Jr" (his father's name was York Morris), and it is not clear why he chose to sign his name in this manner. See Hopkins, "Famous Men of the Negro Race: Robert Morris," Colored American 337-38 (Sept. 1901)."

p. 96 of that book calls him "America's second black lawyer" (after partner Macon Bolling Allen, presumably).

Junior[edit]

pp. 99-100 of that book says little is know of RM Sr.'s son, RM Jr. It notes that Junior is was admitted to the bar Dec. 8, 1874 (too late to be an early law partner of Macon Bolling Allen, BTW) and was the first second-generation black lawyer in the nation. It also notes that Junior "died in December 1883, two weeks after his father's death" -- however most sources seem to agree Sr. died Dec. 12, 1882. That should be cleared up.

The footnote to this note (pp. 117-118) says Junior was educated at Oxford and Harvard as well as in France and Rome.

Photo[edit]

Also, BlackPast.org uses the same photo for Morris and Macon Bolling Allen. Seems to be the same photo Wikipedia uses for Allen. .

Stub[edit]

Went ahead and created a stub so this talk page wouldn't get killed again by User:Skier Dude. Guess I was in violation of Wikipedia:CSD#G8, which I disagree with as un-useful. Woodshed (talk) 06:12, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
