Wiki Education assignment: Behavioral Ecology 2024[edit]

I'm a student at WashU, and as part of the Behavioral Ecology 2024 Wiki Education Assignment, I wanted to give you some feedback on this Wikipedia page. I've sent in a Google document with edits regarding this article to the Wiki assignment. Overall, I thought this article had a lot of good baseline information and facts, which made it interesting to read. I had a few comments on improving flow and the depth of your content. Otherwise, great job. It was very informative and well-written, and I enjoyed learning about your beetle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikakipnisuser (talkcontribs) 20:22, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Opinion[edit]

I enjoyed reading this article on the mustard beetle, and I learned a tremendous amount about its behavioral tendencies. I appreciate the particular emphasis on mating practices, personality, and defense strategies. To help make the article increasingly thorough, I added a section on metabolism (which covers the metabolism of toxic chemicals as an adaptation against target plant defenses) and a section on how mustard beetles use visual and olfactory cues when exercising food choice. I also made your subsection on mating into its own section and created a place for you to further discuss the life history of mustard beetles. I am excited to see how this article develops!VSimhambhatla (talk) 22:24, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment only I've placed a citation needed tag. Müller (2016) produces a referencing error. You might want to fix those two issues before this can go anywhere. Schwede66 21:59, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @MidnightBarber: Please respond to this priority issue or this nomination may be closed. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:59, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Sammi Brie: I fixed the referencing error, it seemed like I cited it as journal when it was actually a conference. If I cited it incorrectly please let me know. I rephrased where there previously was a citation needed tag so my intention is more clear. I think that's all of them fixed, but I'm more than happy to edit something if it's not up to standard. • @MidnightBarber: (By the way: sign your posts with ~~~~ in the same edit for pings to work.) New enough and long enough. Nominator is new to DYK and does not need to review another page. Hook fact checks out to provided source and is in article with citation. Priority item: The line Their elytra are a reflective dark blue-green color and are abundantly dotted with dorsal glands in a parallel lined pattern. Their antennae are black in color. This species of leaf beetle has not been thoroughly studied for any notable sexually dimorphic traits. needs to be cited. Is it also possible to increase the citation density a bit such that entire paragraphs cited to one source can be more granularly identified where in the source each item comes from? Ping me when you can respond to those issues. (Also having someone in WP:DISCORD help me clean up some of the citations to use citation templates.) Suggestions for Additional Information[edit]

Since P. cochlearirae is a common pest, it would be good to add a section at the end about pest control, including previous cases of infestation, current methods of pest control, and whether this species had spread from an original source/if it's expected to spread in the future due to cabbage commercialization.MichelleLi455 (talk) 18:01, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Peer Review[edit]

This article is very interesting and has a lot of information on the behavior of the beetle! I made some minor grammar and sentence structure edits so that the paragraphs are easier to read through. I would suggest adding more information in the Distribution and Life History sections. I would include more information about how the beetles were introduced to North America since there is no explanation. Under the Life History section, I also suggest adding more details. Many beetles go through a similar cycle, so adding more information about how this beetle specifically goes through the cycle would elevate the article (how long do the stages last or where do they lay their eggs).
