Shall review over the next few days! I know nothing about snooker, so this will be very interesting. Reading rules of Snooker now.

Lead[edit]

  • The first sentence is grammatically incorrect. I suggest it be replaced with "In snooker, a maximum break, also known as a maximum or 147 (pronounced one-four-seven), is the highest possible break in a single frame." Note that "a" is used for all names instead of "the", which I think makes more sense here.
    • I disagree, you score a maximum break; you don't score the maximum break, because you can have more than one maximum break. It's also mentioned later how there are multiple versions of a maximum break. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 17:46, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • A bit confused here. I agree you don't score "the" maximum break, but the first sentence begins "The maximum break..." (emphasis added). In any case, the first sentence is still grammatically incorrect.

  • "while David Gilbert made the 147th 147 in the Championship League in January 2019" is this WP:TRIVIA?
  • Define "rolling prize" ?

  • "leading to some discontent among players" a bit weasely, I think it could be omitted
  • "with a 1 million bonus if 20 maximums were ..." Taken literally, this sentence means that the prize would be replaced only if 20 maximums were achieved. Suggest reword to "In 2019, World Snooker Tour chairman Barry Hearn replaced the rolling prize with a conditional 1 million bonus, awarded only if a combined 20 maximums were made over a single season."
  • "If triggered" can be removed; it's clear that the bonus only applies sometimes
  • To be clear, the bonus is awarded if and only if the number of maximums in professional play by ALL players exceeds 20, and in that case, the prize is divided proportionally among those who compiled the maximums?

  • "stated that 20 maximums" -> "stated that making/compiling 20 maximums"

History[edit]

  • "However, beginning in the 1994/95 season," -> "Beginning in the 1994–95 season, however," En dash for consistency, and starting a sentence with however is a pet peeve of mine
  • "Alex Higgins is said to have" by whom? Higgins himself?

  • Is the age of each player relevant here?

      • Not sure about "relevant" in wiki terms, but in sporting terms (i.e., color commentary as Americans call it), much is made of it, particularly age at first maximum break, presumably because (a) people like stories of youthful prodigies, and/or (b) maximum breaks seem to become less frequent as a player ages past their "prime." —KGF0 ( T | C ) 22:42, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Would it be prudent to make this list collapsible? It's rather long. Alternatively, it could be moved to the end of the article

Statistics[edit]

  • In table headings, "Most recent 147" -> "Most recent"; "Total 147s" -> "Total"
  • Data as of?
  • In section Multiple maximum breaks during a tournament, "Player(s)" -> "Players"
  • The English Institute of Sport is referred to as both that name and "World Snooker Academy"; please consistentify

      • Ah, well maybe the World Snooker Academy redirect page could be deleted?
  • In section Match-winning maximum breaks, add that "the following are maximum breaks which thereby won the game" or something to that effect

Records[edit]

  • To be clear, "Professionals v. Amateurs" is the name of the competition? Interesting!
  • "made a 147 break" -> "made a 147" or "compiled a maximum" or whatever

      • Perhaps this could be clarified in the lead then, as another alternative name?
  • "believed to be the first maximum break achieved by a woman" Believed? Perhaps this could be clarified, is this implying doubt?

  • "due to oversized pockets" Spencer was disqualified from the award because his pockets were too large? Clarify

      • Should have been more explicit myself! I meant to say "Spencer's oversized pockets", unless you think it's sufficiently clear already.
  • "achieved twice: " replace with period, or place a semicolon after "televised stages"
  • "at the last 16 of the televised stages" is this specificity necessary?
  • "However, an investigation undertaken by ... " -> "An investigation undertaken... in 2017, however, ..."
  • "However, World Snooker has" I think this however can just be removed.
  • "but not recognised by" -> "but this feat/event is not recognised by"

Prize money[edit]

  • "The prize would be split between players who made a qualifying break" What if a player makes two maximum breaks in a year? Do they get twice the amount of money?
  • Mention that this bonus is unlikely to happen? Otherwise that portion of the lead is uncited

Exceeding 147[edit]

  • Does the color of the balls really matter in this section?

Overall the article is pretty good and quite understandable to a newbie to snooker like myself. Given the importance of this achievement in snooker I think the exhaustive information is warranted. Shall place on hold. Ovinus (talk) 20:02, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

        • Another thing: not sure if all the red links to players are warranted. For example, Wally West and Butch Rogers only seem to be mentioned in Google Search because of this 151 break, so I'm not sure if they would be notable. To be honest I don't know the guidelines surrounding red links, but I'm guessing we don't want red links to things that are clearly not notable. Ovinus (talk) 18:34, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
