I put a link on this and it led me to two meanings. Could someone redirect it to the one that is correct. Thanks. Steve Dufour 07:07, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just letting everyone know...[edit]

I added the section about David Cloud. and the links to some other sites that speak out against jack hyles and his many false doctrines. —Preceding unsigned comment added by K8cpa (talkcontribs) -Chuck

Oh, great; now David Cloud is considered an authority...
Jeri Massi and David Cloud are not suitable sources for an encyclopedic article about other people, and citing them are violations of Wikipedia guidelines. Pooua 06:46, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I see that this morning, JzG has written a line in the article to replace the line I removed last night, namely, that other fundamentalist preachers besides those in the previous several paragraphs have published criticisms of Jack Hyles. The only one named in JzG's single sentence is David Cloud (you forgot to make the link live, JzG).
JzG, you have watched this article long enough to know that David Cloud's verifiability is vulnerable to the same criticisms raised against Sumner and Nischik. All of his materials are self-published. All of his research is that of an amateur, and certainly seen through a strongly-colored lens.
Chuck, whoever he is, appears to be new to Wikipedia. Welcome, Chuck. But, you should be aware that encyclopedias, including Wikipedia, do not proclaim whether a doctrine is a false doctrine or not, because those are judgement decisions. Wikipedia relies on verifiability; encyclopedias deal in facts. It is a fact that several fundamentalists have a negative view of Jack Hyles. It is, incidentally, a fact that most of them can only express those negative views in vague terms. The reason is not that people like David Cloud have failed to produce specific reasons to oppose Jack Hyles; it is that those reasons don't make sense to most fundamentalists. And, for that matter, David Cloud is also considered questionable to many fundamentalists. It may be that more fundamentalists reject David Cloud's research than accept it; the same may be true of Jack Hyles, though Jack Hyles probably is more popular than David Cloud. However, neither man currently commands universal acceptance among fundamentalists. Indeed, I don't know of any man in fundamentalism who does.
That divisiveness within fundamentalism is yet another reason that one should not dwell too long on the fact that Jack Hyles has critics within the denomination. All fundamentalists of any significant fame have fundamentalist detractors! Fundamentalists tend to divide into camps. The Jack Hyles camp mildly opposes the Bob Jones camp. Hyles would not name specific institutions, but it was clear that when he criticized the playing of classical music in a church service, or theological music programs that taught musicians to play classical music instead of gospel music, Bob Jones could not have been far from his mind. Meanwhile, the staid Bob Jonesers were horrified by the crass displays of affection and yelling in Hyles' pulpits, and the boisterous bus ministry that brings in so many thousands of inner-city children. The two institutions come from different cultural traditions. Jack Hyles grew up in poverty-level Texas towns; Bob Jones emphasizes classical refinement of intellect and manners. Regardless of the theological excuses that either side has against the other, the real reason the two annoy each other is this difference of culture. Pooua 17:18, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This whole discussion post has been a hell of a lot more interesting to read than the actual article on this Hyles guy himself (whom I stumbled across while reading the Ted Bundy Wiki)!!! Never heard of him but maybe this article should be written by someone who has never heard of him rather than the people who obviously love him vs. the people who obviously hate him. That lets me out though because personally I think all fundamentalist evangelical christian preachers are complete tossers and the only country with people gullible enough to eat that crap up and beg for more in droves is the good ole US of A. Anyhow, thanks for the entertainment!

This article claims without citation that Jack Hyles received his honarary doctorates from BJU however this article [1] says it was from Midwestern Baptist College (again without a citation). I looked around on the internet and could not find any reference to which college gave him the degree. I will keep looking around and see if I can find out. In the mean time if anyone else knows and would like to let me know I would appreciate it.

Curious...[edit]

Could Hyles be considered an IFB version of Earl Paulk (at least pertaining to the numerous sex scandals)? WAVY 10 16:50, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Probably the most fair thing to say is that in a group of 20,000 people, one is likely to find at least a few criminals, and a few discontents. I attended FBC of Hammond for 3 months in 1984; my sister has been attending since 1988. It is not as wild a place as this article might lead you to believe. Pooua 11:01, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe in three months in 1984, you didn't fully know about the church? As for your sister, maybe she and the other Hyles supporters, believe what they want. Know doubt Nixon maintained his supporters after getting caught too. Paper45tee (talk) 13:41, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies[edit]

Much of the "Controversies" section has nothing to do with Hyles. It is just accusations about things that happened in the church, which he was pastor of, but doesn't relate to him. I might go through sometime and clean it up, removing some unrelated information, but keeping the things solely focused on him. TheAE talk/sign 04:21, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since the Jack Hyles Controversy page was merged with the article Jack Hyles, this page would be the place to show controversies (As long as Hyles is/was involved or is/was a defendant in a suit). Robert M Johnson (talk) 08:19, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Was there not a sex scandal involving Hyles and a secretary in the 80's? I remember it from when I was a kid. If so, why isn't it in this article? I am looking for info about it for a blog post and it's not here. 72.204.20.116 (talk) 19:06, 8 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
