Derry/Londonderry[edit]

In accordance with the guidance at WP:Derry I am using the name Londonderry with the link ]]Derry]] to reflect the fact that the link at Purdon (1993), p. 16–17 is accurate. This in no way reflects any political opinion or insistence upon the prefix. I would thank visiting authors intent on correction to consider this and rather than delete the reference find a better way of doing it in accordance with the WP naming convention. Did you even read it?
  • To avoid constant renaming of articles (and more), keep a neutral point of view, promote consistency in the encyclopedia, and avoid Stroke City-style terms perplexing to those unfamiliar with the dispute, a compromise solution was proposed and agreed in 2004 regarding the Derry/Londonderry name dispute, and has been generally accepted as a convention for both article titles and in-article references since then.
  • Use Derry for the city and County Londonderry for the county in articles. Do not deviate from this merely because the subject relates to a particular side of the political divide
You are using a Stroke City-style construction for no reason. Had the guideline meant use "Derry (Londonderry)" in articles, it would have said so. It does not, it says "Use Derry for the city". Kathleen's bike (talk) 16:10, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not relevant how they refer to it, we use Derry for the city as per WP:DERRY. The reference in their autobiography is not of any real relevance how they call it. The fact he called it Londonderry in the book has no importance attached to it, so it's an irrelevant detail and an unnecessary diversion for the text. Ignoring the sensitivity around the topic, it's just not an important or encyclopaedic detail. If we were to use (called X by Y) for every time someone calls something different then Wikipedia would be full of stuff like that. Derry, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, Taiwan, China, Republic of China, Korea, North Korea, Ireland, Republic of Ireland, the list goes on and on. Canterbury Tail talk 18:14, 29 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was simply trying to make the reference correct. In any event, following further research it transpires No 12 Commando were organised in the region of Co Londonderry and not Derry City as well as in (but not confined to) the Greater Belfast area and around Aldergrove, Co Antrim. I do appreciate the effort you have gone to in order to explain the issue and I assure you I understand it very well. I am Irish with first hand experience of the "Stroke City" argument and have no wish to perpetuate it or become involved in any heated discussions over it. In fact if you examine the Derry article you will find I have posted in favour of the shorter name and provided pictorial evidence for its usage. In future I will be more careful. You were adamant it was referring to the city before, before you couldn't get your way over the name of the city that is. Kathleen's bike (talk) 19:21, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
