Hello @Asdasdasdff, apologies for the ask here, but I have wanted to write more for the background and issues for various Wisconsin elections, and 2002 was one I find perplexing. Within this article, and within the Ed Thompson article, the campaign is listed as having been "considered by some to have been the most negative campaign in the state's history." with the source for this claim being "Wisconsin Gubernatorial Debate, Oct 25 2002 | Video | C-SPAN.org. This seems quite odd to me given it's a single debate video, out of several debates, out of endless background for the election, it seems odd to me how this one citation defines the entire election.

So to circle back, I was wondering if you would like to help me, or to take up the task of fleshing out the background and issues which were at the forefront of this campaign. In my brief searches I couldn't find a whole lot of context for the election. Apologies if this is a huge ask. (I also plan to add data for the primaries including numbers and maps at a later date) Talthiel (talk) 21:21, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I can look into it. That seems like it was probably just some hyperbole from 2004 that just never got cleaned up. I barely remember the 2002 election but I truly cannot believe it could have been nastier than 2014 (or, for that matter, the recall). -- Asdasdasdff (talk) 22:05, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cause there does seem to be some headlines about how the 2002 ethics scandals in WI had affected the campaign, but that's about it in that regard. Talthiel (talk) 22:21, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Caucus Scandal Archive, Political scandals plague Wisconsin, Scandals Begin to Tarnish Wisconsin's Political Luster, Timeline: The 2001 caucus scandal: Read the Wisconsin State Journal's original reports. While there's more sources I could find, these all cover the scandals in the legislature, and not so much anything relating to Doyle, McCallum, or Thompson's candidacies. Though they could have campaigned on returning trust in light of these scandals I guess, the scandals seem external to the campaign for governor. Talthiel (talk) 22:55, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
