Lyptsi (Ukrainian: Липці) is a village in the Kharkiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine.[1] Situated at the point where the Lypets River flows into the Kharkiv River, Lyptsi is close to the border with Russia. It hosts the administration of Lyptsi rural hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine.[2]

History[edit]

The village was founded under the Tsardom of Russia in 1655 by peasants from Right-bank Ukraine.[3] The area had fallen under Russian control as a result of the Khmelnytsky Uprising, with the Cossack Hetmanate swearing fealty to the Russian tsar.

Russo-Ukrainian War[edit]

As the Russo-Ukrainian War escalated into the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Lyptsi was captured by the Russian Armed Forces on 24 February 2022, the first day of the conflict (the village is only 5 kilometres from the border).

By 10 May 2022, a major Ukrainian counterattack around Kharkiv led to Lyptsi becoming contested and regularly being shelled by Russian forces.[4] Four months later, Ukrainian forces regained control of the village on 11 September 2022 as a result of the 2022 Ukrainian Kharkiv counteroffensive.[5]

On 10 May 2024, the Russian Armed Forces launched another offensive towards Kharkiv, its first in the area since February 2022.[6] By 14 May, Russian forces were reported by Russian milbloggers to have entered the northern outskirts (dachas) of Lyptsi.
