I've started this page with subpages based on the WP:VE/UG. This is a different focus to the markup version of this page, since it teaches uploading to Wikimedia Commons as the default. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 09:27, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Differences between this version and the Wiki Markup version

This module and the Wiki Markup module open differently, even though there's no reason for them to be any different until the inserting images page. Which version should we keep? Sdkb (talk) 14:01, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What ...open?--Moxy 🍁 17:43, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Moxy: "Open" as in, the first few pages are different. For instance, the markup version goes into the whole free vs. non-free content distinction in lots of detail, whereas the visual editor version ignores it entirely. I think the ideal would probably be somewhere in the middle. Sdkb (talk) 17:48, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keep short version. Going to be hard to keep any readers as is....so shorter is better Help:Introduction to/All is bigger then the missing manual.--Moxy 🍁 17:54, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Moxy: Fair enough; I'll try trimming it down. I noticed your creation of Help:Introduction to/All, and it's interesting, but it's hard to tell how much the length is just a factor of the format, which obviously wasn't intended to be displayed that way. My rough sense is that the entirety of the Help:Intro series is actually about the same length as WP:Contributing. Sdkb (talk) 19:25, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so looking at the pages, trimming them is probably going to require deleting two of them (the ones on free and non-free images). I'd prefer to have an admin help with that, as they are capable of deleting, so the changes can be made without disruption. Sdkb (talk) 08:32, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with keeping short where possible. I think the markup version contains a bit more detail than necessary at that level. I've so far avoided trimming any of the content written before I started working on the page set, but it'd be logical to start tidying up. Although the set is still shorter than WP:The Missing Manual, there's a huge scope for improvement. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 01:07, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Moxy and Evolution and evolvability: I've created a slimmed down markup page at Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/4/sandbox. I propose that that page replace the "free content", "non-free content", and "Wikimedia Commons" pages. Does it look good to you? If so, we should ping an admin to help implement. Sdkb (talk) 08:35, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: I agree with this. A definite improvement by consolidating the key info for the target audience. Those needing more specific info have links to get more detail. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 09:41, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Implementation

Asking for admin help here because this requires moves over redirects and we'd like to avoid any significant downtime for the tutorial system. Please implement the following in quick succession:

  1. Move Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/2 to Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/Old free content page (optionally tag it with {{Historical}}; otherwise we'll take care of that)
  2. Move Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/3 to Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/Old non-free content page
  3. Replace the content of Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/4 with the content at Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/4/sandbox
  4. Move Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/4 to Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/2 over the redirect to the historical page and do the same for the remaining pages in the Wiki Markup Images tutorial, such that all the pages will be in order ending with the summary page (whose new location will be /4).
  5. Replace the content of Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/tabs with the content at Help:Introduction to images with Wiki Markup/tabs/sandbox.

Sorry this is such a multi-step process, but hopefully the above is clear. Please ask if you have any questions, and thanks for the help!

Beautiful; thank you! Sdkb (talk) 04:26, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

is this fixable

What some readers see.

Received an email about format of the page.....I am also seeing the same thing as mentioned in my email from an IP. Not seeing this specific problem on all pages.Moxy- 03:49, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Missing from this page

I came here hoping to find a discussion of handling different sizes of the same image. I have seen images on Wikipedia that appear in different sizes, but I don't know how to specify that an upload is a different size of an existing image. This page is only helpful for beginners and just covers the basics. A link to a more advanced discussion would be helpful. MiguelMunoz (talk) 23:30, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
