Walter Lacarbonara (born February 27, 1968) is an Italian researcher, author, speaker, editor, and teacher. He is the Professor of Nonlinear Structural Mechanics at the Sapienza University of Rome and Director of the Sapienza Center for Dynamics.[1][2]

His research involves nonlinear dynamics, metamaterials, nonlinear vibration absorbers, CNT/polymer nanocomposites, nonlinear control of vibrations, experimental nonlinear dynamics, asymptotic, and stability of structures.

Education[edit]

Lacarbonara completed his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Sapienza University in collaboration with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1998.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Lacarbonara has been serving as a Professor of Nonlinear Structural Mechanics at the Sapienza University of Rome since 2000.[3]

He worked as Visiting Professor at Stanford University and the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport in 2010 and 2013, respectively. He was a Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Physical Science and Technology, University of Maryland, periodically from 2005 to 2010.

Lacarbonara was invited as a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Honor Society in 1996, Phi Beta Delta, and Honor Society for International Scholars in 1997.

He is a member of the Italian Society of Civil Engineers since 1997 and Associate Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) since 1997,[citation needed] the Italian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (AIMETA) since 2002, and European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH) since 2002. Since 2018, Lacarbonara is one of the founding members of the International Society of Nonlinear Dynamics (NODYS) and Chair of NODYS.[3]

Lacarbonara received fellowships from different universities, such as the Gaikokujin Kenkyusha Program Fellowship in 2001 and the Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 2006.[citation needed]

As an Editor[edit]

As the Editor-in-chief of Nonlinear Dynamics, he launched initiatives to promote the scientific impact of the journal, including the podcast series Nodycast, an online Nonlinear Dynamics Seminar Series hosted by Cassyni, and the international Nonlinear Dynamics Conference Series called NODYCON.[4]

Lacarbonara has served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics.

Research Work[edit]

Lacarbonara is known for his contributions to geometrically exact modeling of complex nonlinear structures and materials, including multilayer laminated plates, metamaterials, nanocomposite materials, mechanical systems with hysteresis, aircraft wings, suspensions, and arch bridges. He has provided the first theoretical and experimental proof of the importance of retaining a sufficiently large number of modes in the discretization of structures exhibiting mechanical asymmetry (i.e., the nonlinear stiffness is different in the two directions of motion), such as buckled beams, arches, shells, suspension/arch bridges, in order to accurately describe the softening/hardening nonlinearity inherent in these systems.

Lacarbonara’s experimental and theoretical studies on branched carbon nanotube/polymer composites have shown that the combination of interfacial CNT/polymer microstructural hysteresis with geometric nonlinearity can be tailored to obtain materials exhibiting softening or softening-hardening nonlinear behaviors. He has proposed and experimentally validated designs of vibration absorbers and isolators exploiting innovative wire ropes made of steel and NiTiNOL wires with stiffness-regulating mechanisms (including negative stiffness elements). His nonlinear absorbers have been shown to make buildings and infrastructure safer against earthquakes and wind storms.

Lacarbonara has also proposed designs of lightweight tensairity structures enhanced by NiTiNOL wire ropes with tension control. These pneumatic structures can be used as load-bearing components of bridges that can be lifted by helicopters and quickly installed in emergency scenarios. He has proposed a mechanical stabilization system for low-mass sling loads used in medical evacuation helicopter rescues, covered by a patent disclosure.
