Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City is a webseries of flash-animated shorts produced by WildBrain and WildBrain Studios. The series premiered on YouTube on September 18, 2021, before being expanded internationally.

Synopsis[edit]

Characters[edit]

Main[edit]

  • Strawberry Shortcake (voiced by Ana Sani) - The main protagonist.
  • Custard (vocal effects by Ana Sani) - Strawberry's pet cat who is very skittish and unnerving.
  • Orange Blossom (voiced by Bahia Watson) -
  • Blueberry Muffin (voiced by Diana Kaarina) -
  • Lemon Meringue (voiced by Andrea Libman, reprising her role from Berry Bitty Adventures) - In this incarnation, she is a trained mechanic.
  • Lime Chiffon (voiced by Margarita Valderrama) -

Recurring[edit]

  • Raspberry Tart
  • Sour Grapes - She is the Purple Pie Man's niece.
  • Bread Pudding
  • Plum Pudding - This is the first time the character has been seen as a male since the 1980s.

Berry Fairies/Cherry Jam Band[edit]

  • Sherry Bobbleberry (voiced by Andrea Libman) - The former leader of the band, who can be quite snobbish, and tends to be rude to her other bandmates, to the point she leaves the band. Unlike her depiction as a kindly fairy in the 2003 series, Sherry is a human although she believes she is a fairy.
  • Cherry Jam (voiced by Aloma Steele) - The current vocalist, as well as the lyricist and guitarist of the band.. She is kind-hearted but is afraid of the spotlight.
  • Peppermint Fizz (voiced by Bethany Brown) - The bassist and additional vocalist of the band. She appears to be Cherry's best friend and comforts her when she is down. Peppermint is much more friendlier than her depiction in the 2003 series.
  • Raisin Cane (Voiced by Justin Saint) - The drummer of the band.. Although not speaking much, they appear to be the voice of reason. They are classified as non-binary in this series.

Antagonists[edit]

  • Purple Pie Man (voiced by
  • Johnnycake Cobbler (voiced by Ian Hanlin): A con-artist who doesn't show any qualms in lying and taking advantage of others. He only appeared in one episode of the main series but appears as the Purple Pie Man's sidekick in the CGI specials.

Development[edit]

In February 2015, AG Properties (now Cloudco Entertainment) sold the Strawberry Shortcake property to the Iconix Brand Group for $105 million.

on May 17, 2016, Iconix announced they had entered into a partnership with DHX Media (now WildBrain) to produce a new television series based on the character, while DHX would handle global distribution for all Strawberry Shortcake media including the new series.[1] The series was scheduled for three seasons, totalling 39 episodes, although no cast, crew, or release date were revealed at the time, and would have used 3D computer animation similar to the 2009 series.[2] Nothing else was announced or said about this incarnation, and it was soon revealed by Berry in the Big City series developer Mike Vogel that this planned series was an early incarnation for Berry in the Big City.[3]

On September 9, 2021, WildBrain officially revealed the series as a Flash-animated webseries for YouTube, that would premiere on September 18, 2021. The company also revealed that a second season was already put into development, and that a series of CGI-animated 45-minute specials would also be put into development for streaming for a 2023 delivery window, later revealed to be Netflix.[4]

Broadcast[edit]

The series was released on Netflix in April 2022.[5]

It premiered on Tiny Pop in the United Kingdom on March 7 the same year.[6]

CGI-animated specials[edit]

The first of the CGI specials - Strawberry Shortcake and the Beast of Berry Bog, premiered in Canada on Family Jr. on September 22, 2023, and premiered globally on Netflix on October 2, 2023. On September 21, 2023, WildBrain announced they had pre-sold the four specials internationally to a selection of broadcasters, and that NCircle Entertainment would handle home media distribution of the series and the specials in the United States.[7]
