Resilient Pakistan: Sociocultural Impact is a non-fiction book by Haya Sehgal. It examines the socio-cultural dynamics of Pakistan, covering historical events and contemporary challenges. With a particular focus on the ideals of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the book examines their relevance to modern-day issues such as extremism, climate change, and political landscapes.

The book was self-published and officially launched as a part of the three-day 9th Islamabad Literature Festival. It was presented on the third day at Parveen Shaker Hall, alongside with speakers, and the author.[1] Additionally, the book was launched in Karachi on 25 December 2023[2] at the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum.[3] It garnered positive reviews from readers and critics alike.[citation needed]

Summary[edit]

Resilient Pakistan: Sociocultural Impact is a collection of articles spanning a five-year period,[4] which explores various aspects of Pakistan's society and culture. The topics covered include the principles of Jinnah's Pakistan,[5] efforts to address extremism, gender equality, educational challenges, and the effects of climate change.[6] The author, Haya Sehgal, emphasizes the significance of cultural diversity, inclusivity, and the preservation of heritage in fostering societal resilience and advancement.

The articles in the book discuss the need to reassess Pakistan's diplomatic relations, promote transparency, and adopt values-driven approaches in international discussions. They provide critical analysis of the country's diplomatic landscape and advocate for a contemporary understanding of Jinnah's Pakistan that adopts to current socio-political dynamics. The main theme of the articles, and of the book as a whole, is the call for a reform in the education system to promote ethical values and counter radical extremism.[4]

Furthermore, the book addresses the challenges faced by minority communities and acknowledges their contributions to Pakistan's cultural diversity. It advocates for a nation that values diversity, ethics and has a renewed vision for the future.[citation needed] Additionally, the book includes a section devoted to those who have dedicated their lives to serving the country.[7]

Launch[edit]

Resilient Pakistan: Sociocultural Impact was formally launched in both Karachi and Islamabad.

In Islamabad, the book was introduced at the 9th Islamabad Literature Festival 2023, organized by Oxford University Press (OUP) and the Capital Development Authority (CDA). The festival, held from November 3rd to 5th, 2023, at the Gandhara Citizen Club in Fatima Jinnah Park (F-9),[8] featured a session on the book's third day[1] at Parveen Shaker Hall. Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed addressed attendees, discussing the book's alignment with Pakistan's founding principles and its exploration of sociocultural factors contributing to national strength. [9]

The book launch in Karachi occurred during an event hosted by the Board of Management of Quaid-e-Azam House Museum[10] coinciding with Quaid-e-Azam's birthday. The book's central theme revolves around Jinnah's legacy and the preservation of traditional values.

Reception[edit]

Nadra Panjwani, a Karachi-based social worker and philanthropist, commended Sehgal's book for its comprehensive exploration of diverse facets of Pakistani society, ranging from the impact of COVID-19 to influential societal figures.[2]

Ameena Saiyid, the former managing director of Oxford University Press (OUP) in Pakistan, lauded the book as a testament to Sehgal's dedication and talent. Saiyid appreciated the breadth of content within the book, which encompasses a wide range of subjects and personalities.[2]

Samuel Ray, an editor, wrote:

"The book's focus on Jinnah's vision, addressing socio-cultural impacts, diplomatic landscapes, education reform, and the challenges of radical extremism is seen as a powerful narrative promoting resilience, diversity, ethical values, and a renewed vision for Pakistan's future. It suggests that the book's message aims to resonate with future generations, fostering a deeper understanding of Pakistan's history and inspiring a commitment to enduring ideals."[11]

Hafsa Razzak, a freelance researcher and a graduate in International Relations from NDU, described Resilient Pakistan as a catalyst for building a positive national image, promoting inclusivity, and advocating good governance to shape a prosperous and resilient nation. Razzak emphasized the book's use of interviews with prominent figures, providing a nuanced perspective on Pakistan's challenges and opportunities. Razzak said the book is "a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of Pakistani society and the path towards a brighter future".[4]
