Nadège Rolland is a French sinologist currently serving as a Distinguished Fellow in China Studies at the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), where she formerly served as a Senior Fellow and Senior Project Director. Her research focuses on China’s foreign and defense policy, grand strategy, and great-power status. In 2017, she authored the first Western book, based on Chinese language sources, about the strategic dynamics behind the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).[1][2][3][4]

Education[edit]

Rolland holds a MA in China studies (summa cum laude) from the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (1994) and a MSc in strategic studies (summa cum laude) from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (2007). She also completed advanced Chinese language training at National Taiwan Normal University.[5]

Career[edit]

Rolland worked for 20 years as an analyst and Senior Advisor to the French Ministry of Defense, focusing on Asian and Chinese strategic issues. Her service was recognized with the Medal of Honor.[1]

She was a non-resident fellow at the Lowy Institute between April 2020 and January 2021.[1]
