Missy Magazine (own spelling: MISSY MAGAZINE) is a German intersectional feminist magazine. It has a focus on pop culture, lifestyle and radical politics.[2]

The magazine is the most successful new feminist magazine in Germany since it was founded in 2008.[3]

History[edit]

“Missy Magazine” was a title developed by the founders Sonja Eismann, Stefanie Lohaus, Chris Köver and Margarita Tsomou.[4] The Magazine was inspired by Bust magazine.[5] In February 2008, the founders won a prize of 25,000 euros for their concept in the "Hobnox Evolution Contest" ideas competition. This enabled them to found the magazine in spring 2008 and finance the first issue.[6] The founders act jointly as publishers and editors. Missy Magazine was first published on 20 October 2008 with a circulation of 15,000 copies, which has since been increased to a print run of 30,000 copies. It was initially published quarterly and has been published bi-monthly since 2017. The magazine is self-published by Missy Magazine Verlags UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG. The magazine has its own radio show called Missy Radio on the internet radio station Reboot.fm. From November 2018, Missy Magazine produced the Softie format for funk. The format was discontinued at the end of 2019. The editorial team includes Hengameh Yaghoobifarah.[7] Anna Mayrhauser was editor-in-chief until May 2023, she was succeeded by Nelli Tügel.

Financial Difficulties[edit]

Money was raised via crowdfunding in 2015 and 2018 to secure the Magazine's operation. In the summer of 2023, it was announced that Missy Magazine was in financial difficulties, partly due to inflation. The print shop that produced the magazine had to close, and the delivery service had to file for insolvency[9] The magazine was at risk of being discontinued.[10] The magazine called for 1,500 new subscriptions within ten weeks to finance the next issue. This target was reached within 48 hours.[11][9]

Missy Magazine and the Concept of Circlusion[edit]

In March 2016 Bini Adamczak published a German article with the title “Come On,” explaining the Concept of Circlusion which is the obverse of penetration.[12] The article was Translatet and Published with the title "On Circlusion",and then started a broader examination on the Topic.[12]

Reception[edit]

People from german right wing magazine Cicero criticize Missy Magazine as illogical, too political correct and focused on needless long words.[13]

German public broadcaster SWR describes the magazine as having a good feel for discovering important figures in german pop culture even before their great success.[14]
