K. K. Kochukoshy is a former General Editor of the Indian National Bibliography[1], former Librarian (Head of Department) at the Central Reference Library[2] and former Officer on Special Duty at the National Library[3] in Kolkata, India. He served as the longest-serving Editor of the Indian National Bibliography.[2]

His efforts in automating and computerizing the Central Reference Library led to a more efficient compilation process for the Indian National Bibliography. His work in this area, is noted to have revolutionized library and information science practices in the region.[4]

Kochukoshy has also been recognized for his contribution to professional librarianship in India. He was nominated as a member and actively participated in the Working Group on Libraries, National Knowledge Commission[5][6][7]. He has contributed to researches pertaining to Indian cultures and traditions.[8]

He was the office bearer of the Calcutta Malayali Samajam and was often consulted on subjects pertaining to Kerala and the Malayalee community in Bengal.[9][10]

Career[edit]

Kochukoshy started his career as a Librarian at St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in Madras (now Chennai) in December 1974 before joining University of Calicut in 1976. He later moved to Kolkata as Sub- editor, Indian National Bibliography and was promoted to Assistant Editor and later as the Librarian (Head of Department) and the General Editor of the Indian National Bibliography at the Central Reference Library.[11]

Under him, the Central Reference Library, Kolkata notably enhanced the skills of library and information science professionals in the North Eastern region and Assam through various training programs, workshops, and seminars. This included a focus on the compilation of bibliographies in regional languages, enabling linguistic diversity and regional representation in library resources. This was supported by collaborative efforts with academic institutions like Dibrugarh University and Gauhati University.[12]

Kochukoshy was reappointed as Librarian of the Central Reference Library and General Editor of the Indian National Bibliography from June 2016 to February 2022.[2] In January 2019, Kochukoshy was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at the National Library in Kolkata, a position he held until May 2021.[13]

Kochukoshy holds a degree in Chemistry from Christian College in Chengannur, as well as Bachelor of Library Science and Masters in Sociology from Jabalpur University in Madhya Pradesh. He also has a Masters in Library and Information Science from Madras University and a PhD from Calcutta University.[11]
