When Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's family was killed on August 15, 1975, Khondaker Mostaq Ahmed took power. He declared Bangladesh as an Islamic republic.[2] Three months later, in 3 November, Khaled Mosharraf overthrow Mostaq and took the power.[3]
Background[edit]
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his most family members were killed on 15 August, 1975 by junior army officers. Soon after Khondaker Mostaq Ahmed assumed as President and declared Bangladesh an Islamic Republic.
Aftermath[edit]
After 3 months of being an Islamic Republic on 3 November 1975, Khaled Mosharraf overthrew Mostaq and took power, and declaring end to Islamic Republic of Bangladesh.
Legacy[edit]
After the coup, communal hatred remained in Bangladesh. In 1988, another military dictator Hussain Muhammad Ershad declared Islam as the state religion of Bangladesh.[4]
