Gorilla Tag is an online multi-player virtual reality video game released on Steam Early Access and Sidequest on February 12th 2021[1], and fully released on the Meta Quest Store on December 15th, 2022[2]. The game is currently available on Steam and Meta Quest.

Gameplay[edit]

In Gorilla Tag, the players, known as Monkes[3] move using a unique locomotion system, which is using their arms to walk. The game currently has four gamemodes: casual, infection, paintbrawl, and hunt.

History[edit]

Gorilla Tag began development in January 2020, being created by Kerestell "Lemming" Smith.[4][5] It was released on Steam in February 2021 It was released on App Lab in the Meta Store on July 2021.[6] As of March 2024, the game has been delisted from the Meta Store on Oculus Quest headsets.

Currency[edit]

Gorilla Tag features the use of an currency known as Shiny Rocks. The player receives 100 Shiny Rocks for every day they log-on, but Shiny Rocks may also be purchased from an in-game ATM. The player can use Shiny Rocks to purchase cosmetics from various shops, such as a mall or in nearby metal boxes where other cosmetics can be found depending on the season or time of year.

Gamemodes[edit]

Casual[edit]

As stated in its name, this gamemode allows players to be casual. There is no objective, this gamemode is often used for roleplaying or talking with friends. Casual is also great for practicing to get better at other gamemodes.[7]

Infection[edit]

The most popular gamemode. Infection is a tag-style gamemode that utilizes the games locomotion abilities. At the start of a round, a random person is selected as a lava monkey, also spelt Lava Monke, and must tag the other players in order to turn then into a lava monkey. If everyone turns into one, the round starts again. If you are in a lobby with 3 or less people, it will be replaced with a slightly different gamemode, where there is instead a rock monkey with an even higher speed boost. If the rock monkey tags another monkey, it will turn into the rock monkey and the previous tagger will become normal again.

Hunt[edit]

Hunt is a gamemode where you have a watch on your wrist which displays a players username, cosmetics, and color. Your goal is to tag this player, the player does not know you are trying to tag them but they may figure it out if you make it obvious you are chasing them. Tagging a player will turn them into a water monkey and you will then get another target to tag. The water monkey has a fastest speed boost in the game. As a "water" monkey you don't have any targets but you can tag other normal monkeys making them slower but still in the game.

Paintbrawl[edit]

Paintbrawl, as is implied by the name, is a paintball-styled gamemode. It follows a three-strike ruleset. You have a slingshot with paint at all times. Shoot opponent players to pop their three balloons. When all of your balloons are popped you become a paint monkey. As a paint monkey you get a speed boost. You can still use your slingshot to slow down a monkey on the opposite team but you cannot pop their balloons. There are two teams, the blue team and the orange team, your color will be replaced by the team you are on but if you leave the lobby you were in your color will be replaced to your normal color.

Maps[edit]

There are currently 9 maps in Gorilla Tag.

Forest[edit]

Forest is a map with a mostly flat, grassy surface, and trees scattered throughout. There is a cave that serves as a tutorial area where players can learn how to move, jump, climb, and tag other players. Its usually a simple and straightforward environment, designed to be beginner-friendly and to help players get accustomed to the game's movement mechanics before jumping into more complex maps and gameplay. The area is not designed to be accessed more than once, so slippery walls and invisible wind barriers are placed near the top of Forest to stop the "Monkes" from being hard to tag, or trolling new players. There is also a hole in a wall that leads the player to the Beach Map. There is a large tree stump in this map, sometimes referred to as "Stump" by other players, but its official name is "Tree". The stump also serves as a connection point to the Canyon, Caves, and City maps. It's also the spawning point for players unless they are playing the game for the first time (then they will spawn in the tutorial). Forest also contained two bugs named Doug, who is a June Beetle, and his partner that is unnamed and was added in the 2024 Valentines Update. In the Nowruz Update, the unnamed bug was removed from the game, but pupas appeared throughout Forest containing children from Doug and the unnamed bug. However, in the following update, the children disappeared. The map has been altered in certain updates, such as adding an easier entrance to "Tree" in the game's beta stage, and being changed for seasonal updates.

Caves[edit]

Caves is a map that is themed like a mineshaft. It contains crystals that make sounds on impact and every different crystal color makes a different sound on the crystal piano. Another user-named animal appears here, Matt the Bat, also flies around the map.

Canyons[edit]

A mid-western styled canyon with working ropes and ziplines. This map contains many rectangle shaped apartments that you can enter with salt lamps. This was the 2nd map to get a overhaul.

City[edit]

A place to buy cosmetics and get access to competitive lobbies inside the parkour course . This map leads to 3.5 different maps. Basement, Mountains, Rotating and parkour, parkour shares the same servers as city lobbies so it is typically not counted as a map.

Mountains[edit]

Ice floors and snow on top. There is a long purple slide that can exit at 2 places. There is also a fan that blows you to the top of the map. An ice slide on the floor also appears. This was the first map to get revamped.

Clouds[edit]

Clouds with wooden machinery and small homes in some sort of village. Clouds is one of the only maps that had different gravity from the rest of the game. Additionally all the science decorations have not been removed despite decor being removed from other map’s, As of 3/22/24 the entrance has been blocked and as of 4/5/24 it has been reopened when the Flying Monkes update came out.

Basement[edit]

Basement contains a basic 80's room with posters all around and an old television. In the middle of the room there is a table with an entrance that slowly makes you more tiny as you go down it, this puts you in a tiny maze with 2 monsters with a monkey head with only one eye and tentacles coming out of it that also have eyes, encountering these monsters will make them attack you and throw you underground in a giant empty room with a prison cell in the middle, right next to the prison cell is a chest that if opened will give you a squeaky toy cosmetic of the monsters in the maze. This map was updated for the science update and now contains a new map in the middle part of the basement. Its now a giant cylinder tube type map with a soda bottle in the middle. You can throw mentos into the soda bottle causing it to explode and becoming a lava rising type game where you have to make it to the top of the tube without touching the rising soda. Touching the soda makes you a soda monkey, there is no difference with the stats of this role besides changing your skin to a green color, you can become a normal monkey again by being hit by a water balloon from another player, going into the water at the bottom of the map, or exiting the map. After a while of the soda rising bubbles will start appearing that the player can jump on and be safe, although eventually it will get bigger and then pop and the player will fall into the soda. The player can follow a path of the bubbles to be safe and make it to the top without being taken by the soda. At the top there is a chest with a t-shirt cosmetic. Despite the Science Experiment Cosmetics leaving, the basement changes will stay.

Beach[edit]

This map contains a swimming mechanic and many ropes and ziplines. It also has a water soccer game, only changing for seasonal events.

Rotating[edit]

This is a map that will be changed out randomly. It is currently The 2020 Caves map This is so the developers can experiment with maps and mechanics before releasing them as an actual map.

Queues[edit]

Queues are filters for various lobbies, this is to ensure that players are playing with who they want to play with.

Default[edit]

Default is the default queue for casual players who want to play the game as normal with no changes made.

Competitive[edit]

Competitive is a queue that was made for people who want to be competitive at the game. The way you unlock this queue is by beating the parkour course in city.

Minigames[edit]

Minigames is a queue for people who don't necessarily want to play the game with it's original purpose but instead want to play to have fun and play fun and creative games that do not have their own game modes.
