Drew Sullivan is an American investigative journalist and the co-founder and publisher of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). He co-founded OCCRP with investigative journalist Paul Radu in 2007.[1] In 2023, Sullivan stepped down as OCCRP's editor in chief and was replaced by Miranda Patrucic.[2] He also founded the Center for Investigative Reporting in Bosnia-­Herzegovina in 2004.

As editor of OCCRP, Sullivan oversaw many stories and projects, including Russian Laundromat, Azerbaijani Laundromat, Troika Laundromat, Suisse Secrets, and Russian Asset Tracker.[3]

Awards[edit]

Sullivan has been a member of reporting teams that have won the Tom Renner Award for crime reporting from Investigative Reporters and Editors,[4] the Daniel Pearl Award,[5] and the Global Shining Light Award.[6] The Troika Laundromat won the Sigma Data Award for best data-driven reporting in 2020.[7] Russian Asset Tracker won the Innovation Prize from the European Press Prize in 2023.[8]

In 2020, Sullivan and Radu won the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship.[9] Sullivan was named “25 Over 50” Class of 2022 from Editor & Publisher.[10] In 2023, Sullivan and Radu accepted the University of Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service on behalf of OCCRP.[11]

Media Development[edit]

Sullivan is on the steering committee of the Global Fund for Media Development.[12] Additionally, he helped to establish the Journalism Development Network, inc. (JDN), a Maryland-based non-profit with programs in Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.[13]

Film and Appearances[edit]

Sullivan is the executive producer of “The Killing of a Journalist,” a documentary about the murder of Ján Kuciak and his fiancé Martina Kusnirova and the corruption in the Slovak government that was uncovered after the murders. The film premiered at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and has won film festival awards.[14]

Sullivan has appeared on PBS NewsHour[15], and spoke at the Aspen Ideas Festival about dark money and the globalization of corruption.[16] In July 2023, Sullivan testified in front of the U.S. Helsinki Commission about Russian money laundering in Switzerland.[17]

Press Freedom[edit]

Sullivan created Reporters Shield[18], a membership program for media outlets and NGOs that helps defend investigative journalism against SLAPPs — strategic lawsuits against public participation — and other legal harassment.[19][20]

Personal Life[edit]

Before transitioning to journalism, Sullivan pursued a career in aerospace engineering, contributing to the Space Shuttle project for Rockwell Space Systems.[21]
