Cary Breckinridge Jr. (October 5, 1839 – May 11, 1918) was a soldier in the in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). He served in the Army of Northern Virginia. Through the war, he reportedly suffered five wounds, and had five horses shot from under him .
Biography[edit]
Breckenridge was born on October 5, 1839 in Catawba, Botetourt County, Virginia to Cary Breckenridge, Sr. and his wife, Emma Walker Gilmer.
Breckinridge graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia in 1860.[1]
Breckinridge and his four brothers joined the Confederacy in 1861.[1]
In 1869, Breckinridge was pressured by the local Conservative Party to run as a candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates to represent his home county of Botetourt.
Breckinridge still closely remained in the local Conservative Party's politics, including its successor, the Democratic Party.
Breckinridge died on May 11, 1918.[1]
