Harry McDonald (footballer, born 1926)

Just created this article, initially just as "Harry McDonald". Before starting it, I checked and could find no other article in the same name, on Wiki. However on moving from draft into mainspace, on checking "what links here" from the tools on the left, I found listed a number of well known American athletes. I checked some of the articles but couldn't find the link but to be on the safe side, so to speak, I moved the article again to the name as it stands now. However, the list of links from the various athletes still appears after clicking "what links here". I'm a bit confused by this. Thanks. Eagleash (talk) 23:02, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Eagleash. The links still appear because the page Harry McDonald (with nothing after it) is currently a Redirect to Harry McDonald (footballer, born 1926). To fix the issue, I'd suggest going to the the redirect page directly and editing it to turn it into a disambiguation page that distinguishes between the various Harry McDonalds. Hope this helps! Danny Light

Very good question, and an unusual scenario which I have never seen in over 9 years of editing, and to which I'm afraid I don't have an answer. I'll re-raise at WP:BLPN; in the meantime have you considered contact CPFC to let them know and see if they can verify/publish a piece on their website? GiantSnowman 12:32, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

(@GiantSnowman:) I've spent a good bit of time on this (as I don't like to be beaten...) but nothing in the records. I have, however, traced the Facebook pages of Danny's widow [1] and brother [2]. They contain tributes, a period image in strip, references to funeral service, an image of a Dartford programme with a tribute, messages of condolence, etc so there's no doubt. Facebook can be used as a source where it's unequivocal (uncontroversial) - the exact date, 20 Oct is not supported except in the supporters' site used as reference #1 on Danny's WP article, but the programme was uploaded 25 Oct. Danny married Laura in 1981, Camberwell (they appear to have lived in London recently, but I couldn't get an address). He's the rather portly, suntanned gent on the cover photo of Laura's page. You'll need a logged-in Facebook presence to view the content. As you opined, Eagleash, it's better to have the page accurate. I used social media to update Leon Haslam's page for a child's birth when there was no other news or records source, and to confirm Frank Perris' death by way of funeral arrangements posted to Facebook with accommodation and parking tips, although someone had already added the death-date from a foreign-language semi-blog. I can upload the image from the Facebook pages under a fair use rationale for the infobox, if you think that's appropriate - certainly a good action capture and indicative of his time in the game. I ran it through the Google image search and it was only used at this fansite page, 3 Nov, pre-dating the Facebook useage.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 00:43, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

There is no need to 'prove' an offline source through a photograph, it can be adequately cited using {{cite book}} or {{cite journal}} - though it would be helpful if you could provide details such as page number, edition etc. GiantSnowman 08:46, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: & @Rocknrollmancer: I think I'm a little confused here now :P. I think Rocknrollmancer is referring to a shot of Light in late '60s CPFC strip which could be used as infobox image (?). I am no good at image use criteria — I've only ever used images of my own uploaded via Commons — so don't feel able to comment on whether it's appropriate or not, really. Sorry. — It would make a decent i/bx image though.

Whilst 'here' could one of you have a look at the message, below this one, from MAbbey regarding his re-write of the CB400T article (one for Rockandrollmancer possibly). I think the re-write is an improvement on the existing page but like him I'm unsure of the best way to go about inputting it. A.S.H. the stripey-strip pic I have already formatted last night, but just didn't want to go ahead on 'your' page...Under a 'fair use rationale' several criteria must be met, the main one being that the person is deceased. Another being low resolution and small physical size (maximum pixel size of 110,000, so 250px x 400px = 100,000) to prevent any high-quality copies being made; the image can only be uploaded to Wikipedia, and used on the Wikipedia (en) page for the particular article and remains linked to it, i.e., it cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (and re-used from there by anyone, for any purpose, as is 'normal'). If you look at this File:Tom Phillis on BSA Gold Star.JPG, I used the image of Tom Phillis as a dummy for sizing (put it in the Danny Light infobox as a draft try), but the Danny Light image would be narrower (the infobox re-sizes it, and/or manually). I'm sure that's confused you enough! When I queried if it was appropriate, I meant appropriately-indicative of his playing career, not of later in life. Regarding the hypothetical case where an image of a publication is uploaded to a blog or similar, then we cannot inline-citation directly link to it as an info source as it violates some [[WP:***}} copyright aspect, can remember the exact one! --Rocknrollmancer (talk) 10:11, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Advice needed

Hello Eagleash, I hope you don't mind but as you were so helpful with the on the Super Dream article is was wondering if I could ask for your help? I have been drafting a total rewrite of the CB400T article in my sandbox and it is about as complete as I feel I can take it. My question to you is what to do next regarding putting it up? Hi @MAbbey: - my first suggestion would have been to merge the existing article with your sandbox, but I see your sandbox has a long history with multiple topics covered. Therefore I suggest you simply copy and paste the content from your sandbox into the existing article, and use an edit summary along the lines of "re-writing article, content moved from my sandbox" - please give me a shout if you need any more help. Regarding David Lindsay, yes the redirect was meant to be back to the disambigaution page - we have David Lindsay (English footballer) and David Lindsay (Scottish footballer). CB125T

Hi, I stumbled upon your draft for the CB125T. I have put the dimensions in, I hope you don't mind. I have a little bit of research on this model. I was going to have a go at this model a little while ago but the internet seems a bit short on decent references on it. Mostly it's just original research on fan sites. I have a copy of a brochure with the usual stats. T Bone

Gooday A.S.H. - just to confirm that I am still on the cae of the CD175 and will start to clean-up the content soon, but need to do a bit more research on the difference between the pressed steel frame and tubular (gearbox mountings at the crankcases and CB160). I have started very superficially to look at Underbone which I imagine will take a long time to trawl-through, due to my scepticism. On that note, when researching other stuff I have also been conscious of 1960s usage of 'step-through' and found two references to Mokick, of which I was not aware, even though the mags themselves have been in the house for 50 years (same house). One is in the prose, the other in a Suzuki GB advert "Suzuki Suzy Mokick". It Google-tranlates from the German as meaning a moped with a kick-start, [3], hence an early type of noped? As far as I was aware, Pitchero is a web-hosting tool used by lower-non-league clubs wanting to get a cheap official website up, so if it's a club's own site on Pitchero then I'd say treat it as you would any other club's proper website. GiantSnowman 08:45, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Commer vans

The unlamented FC was kept in production for BT long after it should have been replaced (also the Morris Ital van). They were badged as Commers until very late. The final change was the same one (1979?) that caused Ford to make the Cortina Mk IV into the Cortina Mk V - European rules that indicators needed to be visible from the sides, not just ahead. This caused a very minor redesign, a new plastic grille with new wrap-around lights and a Dodge badge with the new pentagon logo, the branding change shared between the Talbot T on cars and the Dodge pentagon on vans and trucks.

There were, incidentally, the worst light vans ever made. Narrower front track than rear and a front axle behind the driver's arse. Impossible to parallel park or to reverse around a corner, especially in a small telephone exchange yard. Hateful things.

Also note that a lot of the crossover with Dodge light trucks involved Renault too. Look at European military one tonners. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:52, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Some of you are very cruel...I can still remember the registrations - how sad is that? Our 'early' van FAL 366J, one seat only, the business had from new, low mileage and good mechanically went rotten and was sold to a gypo-type trader at our car auctions - I loaded it onto a drop-side Tranny using two oil drums and the forklift with extensions, under directions of the new owner. The replacement PVO 501M was well-used from the contract-hire side of commercial sales but had three seats. My brother, a National Coal Board employee was very impressed with the petrol engines compared to the noisy NCB-spec diesels with insulated undertray for the people-carriers. When set up right, they would hustle along no problem despite the narrow track - due to low gearing and commanding driving position, mostly. Lola T370

Hmm, maybe it's a more personal scale that I use; it doesn't so much lack adequate reliable sources as any reliable sources. Plus, as you say, there's basically nothing about the car, just a list of races it took part in. It's a very basic article. Anyway, Small would be a good start, maybe just slap a ref in at the end of each paragraph rather than having to source each race; it's not contentious info or anything and I can't see anyone challenging it. I haven't checked but if any of the drivers involved have a F1 Rejects profile, there might be something there. I have a decent reference book of F1 cars (Hodges' A–Z), but sadly I don't have it here with me; that might have to wait a few weeks, but it will surely have some good info on the car itself. Anything Motor Sport can throw up would be a help. I'll check FORIX and my usual go-to sources for anything useful, but I might draw a blank. I get the feeling that the Lolas might have been a bit obscure even then, as a stopgap. Smallman might be worth an article if he designed other cars; again, Hodges' book might enlighten us about him once I get my hands on it again. I had no idea about F1 Rejects' problems, I guess I haven't visited in a while, and I didn't know you contributed to it – I always enjoyed that site. I hope that it can be resurrected to an extent in due course. It'd be a shame to lose that resource, to say the least. Regarding the T370 article again, I would like to rewrite the 1974 season text just to phase out the "this race saw this" and "that race saw that" style, which I think doesn't help matters. I'll try and stretch it out a bit, maybe make two or three paragraphs. Regarding Small, I tend to trust that book. Moreover, FORIX also make no mention of the T371 being used in 1975, and nor does this source, complete with chassis numbers [4]. Then there's this [5] and this [6], which say Stommelen used the T371 in South Africa, although FORIX says he used the GH-1. This leads me to suspect that the T371 and the GH-1 are the same car, with some kind of trickery involved in the naming of it. I will delve further. The only question might be exactly when the renaming took place, i.e. was it before or after it was first raced? OK, I think I've got it. Firstly, we can say for sure that Hill and Stommelen used T370s in Argentina and Brazil. In South Africa, Hill continued with the T370 while Stommelen debuted the T371. After that race, the T371 was renamed the GH1 and Migault used it in Spain. Stommelen was given the new, second-built GH1 which had originally been designated GH2 because they were using chassis numbers as model names, like Tyrrell used to do. So although at the time of the Spanish GP, it was called the GH2 (making Jenks' contemporary account correct), it was retrospectively changed to GH1 when they scrapped that idea of using chassis numbers as model names. Stommelen had smashed it to bits in Spain anyway obviously, which was why there was only one GH1 (the ex-T371) in Monaco, and Hill drove it. So technically, Hill never drove the T371 although only because it had been renamed the GH1. He also had a try in the T370 in Monaco as you say, but to no avail. So Hill gives up, and for Belgium, Brise drove the first GH1 (ex-T371) and Migault drove the hastily-built third GH1. By July they had built a fourth GH1 and stopped using the first one. The T370 had become an occasional spare car, unused after Monaco. GH2 then became the name of the car they were building for 1976, and this was the car Brise was testing on their ill-fated trip to France, and it never raced. At least I think that's how it went. Yes, that's basically it. I don't think the IP's tables reflect this new understanding at all, so they'll need fixing. I guess we can't blame him for not figuring it out since it took us a while ourselves! I'd definitely go with the merge of T371 and GH1, and I think a bold merge might be in order, leaving a redirect. Only a few people are going to notice or care at the moment, and I'm sure they'll understand. We can explain the renaming in the article and if anyone asks, we can always direct them to our pages by way of further explanation. The GH2 article is about a car that never raced, but I guess that's fine as it can all be sourced etc. I half-noticed a lot of images flying around, but I didn't realise it was all the same guy! Lord, where does he get them all from? You're right that he doesn't seem to get it. All we can do really is keep taking out the excess ones – leaving in a reasonable number. A cautious approach might be best; it seems he has some misconceptions about images in general, such as some kind of monetary value he places on them. The above page was recently created in its talk-page by an IP editor well-known to the Formula One project who has a habit of doing this sort of thing. I moved the created page into mainspace but now find that there are two identical pages; one each in Talk:Lola LC91 and Lola LC91. I am not sure of the correct procedure to fix this. Thanks. Inboard discs

Do you think it's appropriate to use this term in a motorcycle article CBX550, as clearly the discs are not 'inboard' of anything except a rain/dust cover, and were not adopted widely (or at all?) otherwise. Part of my motivation in trying to understand how Wikipedia corrupts history has been to observe how over-zealous wikilinking is applied (think - Underbone). I have sat on this for a long time, and have an original MCN where the model was introduced with no mention of 'inboard'. One of the main corruptors of some Wikipedia topics I have been investigating for nearly three years has recently used this term recently in his social media on a pic of his 1960s machine crashed in 1970s (with the 59 Club breakdown vehicle in attendance seen in the background).

Is there any wider use of the term 'inboard discs' that I am unaware of on 'conventional' solo machines? Does the workshop manual quoted use the term 'inboard'? Are the discs themselves ventilated, or is it the housing, or both? Thx.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 13:03, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!

Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

• Adding the new scheduled article to Wikipedia talk:Today's articles for improvement and removing the entry from Wikipedia:Articles for improvement
• Set up the schedule pages for the new TAFI, except the adding of an image and caption
• Adding {{TAFI}} to the new article for improvement, remove {{TAFI}} from last week's article and add {{Former TAFI}} to the talk page
• Notify relevant WikiProjects that the new TAFI is within their scope
• Send a mass message to everyone on the notification list of the new TAFI selection

Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

After all, there are scanned pages of the print version supplied there as well, which would lead me to think that we can cite the actual printed magazine using the archive? Zwerg Nase Yes quite different. The page Nos. in the hard copy run from 1 to whatever through each volume (a year's issues) hence page 25 in Feb 19XX will be something like page 130+ in the magazine. Also articles in the archive have only one page No. whereas the hard copies can have 2, 3 or more depending on the type of article. However, your choice how you want to do them of course.
