Dr. Jitendra Sharma (born in 1981) is the Managing Director and Founder CEO of Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ)[1][2], one of the world's largest medical device manufacturing clusters.

Early Life and Academic Background:[edit]

Dr. Jitendra Sharma hails from Chittranjan, West Bengal, India. He obtained a B.Sc in Organic Chemistry, followed by a Postgraduate degree in Hospital Administration. He also holds Master's in Financial Management, in Health Economics & Policy, and in Healthcare Quality.

He earned PhD in International Health Regulations from TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences), Mumbai, another Doctorate in Health Technology Assessment from VU Amsterdam, and in Health Financing from MATS University, India.

Dr. Jitendra Sharma holds three academic PhD/doctorate degrees and has received training from various prestigious institutions, including AIIMS - New Delhi, PMDA-Japan, Uppsala Monitoring Centre - Sweden, JBI Institute - Australia, Harvard School of Public HealthUSA, Vrije Universiteit - Amsterdam, Tata Institute - Mumbai, MATS University - Raipur, and Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning - Prashanti Nilayam.

In his previous experience, Dr. Jitendra Sharma has directed crucial projects like implementing intensive care units and improving patient safety and care quality, also led research projects on innovative patient care models, international significance projects, and management of disease outbreaks, while working at AIIMS - New Delhi.

He served as adjunct faculty at the University of Adelaide, Australia and provided guidance and expertise as an adviser to the Health Technology Innovation Centre at IIT-Madras. He worked as a consultant at World Health Organization Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and also served as an advisor (Health) to Chief Minister, Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP).[3]

Dr. Jitendra Sharma established AMTZ[4]—a self-contained city for medical device production within a 300-acre greenfield campus in a remarkable 342 days, setting records on a global scale. It achieved a historic milestone by winning the 2018 ACCE International Award, making it the first Indian Medtech Park to accomplish such a feat[5][6].

He also led the foundation of Kalam Institute of Health Technology[7] which operates as a medical technology policy institute & provides its services to various Ministries of Government of India and also it is recognized as World's first WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Innovations.[8]

He has received many awards and accolades as change maker[9]. He spearheaded the creation of the DBT-AMTZ Command Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic, transforming it into a pioneering supply hub for COVID-related medical devices. Produced over 1 million RT-PCR COVID tests and more than 1,000 oxygen concentrators daily.[10][11]

  • Dr Jitendra Sharma was instrumental in establishing two centres of Australian Universities in India, which includes the Centre for 3-D Bioprinting of University of Wollongong [13][14]and the Joanna Briggs Institute of Evidence-Based Medicine of the University of Adelaide.

Dr. Jitendra Sharma has been awarded the European Union–India Young Leaders Award at the European Union Parliament in Brussels in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the medical technology sector.[15]

  • He holds the distinction of being the first Indian to receive the prestigious Laufman Greatbatch Award [16] from AAMI-USA and has also been honoured with the Leadership Excellence Award by the American College of Clinical Engineering.[17]

Dr. Jitendra Sharma’s recently launched book- ‘Made in Lockdown[19]is considered as the first book chronicling the complex subject of medical technology. For the general readers. It is one of the best non-fiction category books on India’s fight against Covid, in which AMTZ played a major role, with Dr. Jitendra Sharma leading it from the front.
