Summary

Description
English: Photograph of a two-man Halkett boat owned by John Rae on display at Stromness Museum, Orkney. It is the only known two-man Halkett boat in existence, and is possibly one of only two known remaining Halkett boats, the other is in the Manitoba Museum.

The informational sign alongside the boat states that "the bow is painted with 'Dr Rae, Hudson Bay' and on the stern 'James Fiztjames' [...], however, the names are no longer visible due to the rubber fusing." and "The cloth boar here, the only two-man example known to survive, was given by Rae to a friend in Orkney. This is probably the additional boat Rae requested from London for his final expedition in 1853. It went astray and was never used by Rae in the Arctic, although he found it years later 'when it had become deteriorated by damp'."

In the words of Rae, "It is altogether a most useful little vessel, and... ought to form part of the equipment of all surveying parties, whether by land or sea."
