Hash nu rc, Surrey. 84 23 6 1913 Jonathan Hutchinson who was born atBelby, in Yorkshire, the 23rd of July 1828, wasthe second in a family of eight sons and twodaughters. His grandfather was JonathanHutchinson, the good man of Gedney, who, weare told by one of his biographers, Joseph JohnGuxney, inherited a small estate of rich pastureland from ancestors who had possessed andoccupied it for about 200 years, and who had,moreover, been Friends since the rise of theSociety. To the end of his days old JonathanHutchinson remained a farmer in a quiet andisolated village, in which there were few ornone who could be considered in any sense hiscompanions. Green Gedney was called theparadise of frogs and graziers ; it is a flatdistrict, not far from ague-producing marshes,and is intersected by broad ditches instead ofhedges.
