Summary

Description

Native yearlong-green perennial large densely-tufted sedge. Stems are 3-angled, yellow-green and to 1 m tall. Leaves are strap-like and rough edged. Flowerheads are yellow-brown, narrow, erect, spike-like panicles to 40 cm long. Flowering is from late winter to summer. Found in areas that are damp or wet to a shallow depth for long periods (e.g. drains, stream banks and swamp margins). Native biodiversity. It performs a useful role in preventing erosion in drainage lines. Can form dense stands, which provide shelter for native animals, but also feral animals. Can be controlled with herbicides, but old growth

limits their effectiveness and plants are difficult to slash due to their density. Management must comply with the Native Vegetation Act. Rarely grazed by stock, although stock will nibble the leaf tips occasionally. Abundance is favoured by set stocking regimes.
