Title
a post medieval or modern artefact, possibly a palm guard
Description
English: A crudely cast, lead object, possibly a palm guard, probably dating from the 17th-20th century (c. AD 1600 - c. AD 1950). It is a rounded oval in shape and is flat, except for a slight bevelling to the upper surface. The underside has two small oval depressions in the centre, one of which has pierced completely through the object; the other has a number of smaller depressions, possibly suggesting that it has been used to push a needle through a tough material. Leather workers' palm guards are discussed in an article in Gordon Bailey's 'Detector Finds 2', 1993, pages 64-5. Dating of these artefacts is very difficult; the earliest examples seem to date from the 17th century, although they may have been in use right through to the 20th century (Bailey, 1993, page 64). This example has a patchy, cream patina. It is 55.3mm long, 42.2mm wide and 6.6mm thick. It weighs 62.7 grams.
