The Global Campus of Human Rights (GCHR) is an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence,[1] supported by the European Union.[2] GCHR embraces over 100 universities dedicated to the promotion and advancement of human rights education, research, outreach and advocacy.[3] The GCHR strives to promote human rights and democratisation through higher education, specialised training programmes, research and outreach. The GCHR has a presence in eight regions of the world: Africa, Arab World, Asia-Pacific, Caucasus, Europe, Latin America, Caribbean, and South East Europe. Regional headquarters of GCHR are in Pretoria, Beirut, Bangkok, Yerevan, Buenos Aires, Sarajevo, and Bologna. Each headquarter is coordinated by the main office in Venice Lido. The centre is housed in the Monastery of San Nicolò al Lido which has been made available to the GCHR by the Municipality of Venice, Italy.[4] In February 2021, The Global Campus of Human Rights and the Veneto Region engaged in dialogue to reaffirm the importance of human rights.

Master’s programmes[edit]

According to its Statute, the GCHR’s primary focus is human rights higher education, specifically through the administration of eight regional master’s programmes managed by its seven regional academic hubs.[5]

  1. The master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA/GCHR Africa based at the University of Pretoria)
  2. The Arab master’s programme in Democracy and Human Rights (ARMA/GCHR Arab World based at the Saint Joseph University in Beirut)
  3. The master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Asia-Pacific (APMA/GCHR Asia-Pacific based as Mahidol University)
  4. The master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in the Caucasus (CES/GC Caucasus The Master's Programme in Human Rights and Sustainability in Central Asia (MAHRS/GC Central Asia)
  5. The European master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA/GC Europe based at the Global Campus HQ)
  6. The master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Latin American and the Caribbean (LATMA/GC Latina America and Caribbean based at the National University of San Martin)
  7. The European Regional master’s programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe (ERMA/GC South East Europe based at the University of Sarajevo and the University of Bologna jointly)

These regional programmes are supported by the European Union and offer specialised post-graduate education and training in human rights and democracy from a regional perspective and interdisciplinary content, as well as a multiplicity of research, publications, public events and outreach activities.

The GCHR complements the educational activities of the regional programmes with the exchange of lecturers, researchers and students, thus fostering multi-regional understanding and comparativism; the development of MOOCs and online courses with an emphasis on intersectionality; capacity building initiatives related to human rights education developed in synergy with local actors and national institutions; the promotion of global research projects and dissemination activities that bring together scholars, practitioners, and experts from various regions; the professional development of graduates, supported through internships in inter-governmental organisations.

The Global Campus of Human Rights places a strong emphasis on networking through the Global Campus Alumni Association, which encompasses the currently seven regional alumni associations.[6]

The Global Campus has cultivated partnerships with various international organisations, governmental bodies, and NGOs.[7] For instance, with the European Parliament and its Sakharov Prize. [8]

In 2019, Right Livelihood entered into a long-term cooperation with the Global Campus of Human Rights focusing on human rights education and the promotion of children’s rights. These collaborations contribute to the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices in the field of human rights.[9]
