The MS Antonia Graza is a fictional transatlantic ocean liner that first appeared in the 2002 film Ghost Ship, and later in a point-and-click Flash game.[1]

Descriptions[edit]

Chimera[edit]

In the first draft of the script, the Antonia Graza was originally another ship named Chimera, named after the mythological creature of the same name. The ship was owned by the Dobbins Kirk Line, home ported to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and launched on July 9, 1932. In this version, the ship disappeared in the Gulf of Oman, on February 2, 1953, after departing Dubayy for Halifax.[2]

Ghost Ship[edit]

In the 2002 film Ghost Ship, the Antonia Graza is in the Atlantic Ocean sailing from Italy to New York. The ship was built in the shipyards of Genoa, for the Italian Line.[3]

Designed as an Andrea Doria-class ocean liner, she was the sister ship of the SS Andrea Doria, and SS Cristoforo Colombo.

Legacy[edit]

Dedicated fans have been recreating the ship in various forms for many years. In June 2015, a fan created a fully explorable Minecraft version of the ship.[5] In November 2018, another fan published an explorable 3D-model of the ship they had built to Steam.[6] A Roblox fan-recreation of the ship was revealed in 2023, and the journey re-creating the ship was documented on a Tumblr page dedicated to the project.[7]

Etymology[edit]

The ship prefix M. S. is used for ships that are powered by an internal combustion engine, usually diesel.

The name Antonia is of Roman origin meaning "priceless", "praiseworthy" and "beautiful".[8] Graza is of Latin origin, and is derived from the Latin root “grātus,” meaning “effortless beauty, gracefulness, elegance, beauty, gratitude, forgiveness, indulgence.” [9]
